Dear LinusTechTips forum,

I've been having a problem for a while. My fps that I get while playing games is lower than the fps I got a year ago.

For example while playing H1Z1, I get 60fps on low settings and the game does not seem to run smooth, but 1 year ago I got like 120fps on medium/high settings and the game felt buttery smooth.

System specifications:

CPU: AMD FX 6300 (OVERCLOCKED TO 4.8GHZ, STABLE IN AIDA64)

GPU: GEFORCE GTX 750TI OC (NOT OVERCLOCKED)

HDD'S: TOSHIBA 500GB (WINDOWS), SEAGATE 1000GB (GAMES)

RAM: 8GB DDR3 1866MHZ

I have already downloaded windows once again but that makes no difference.

I also downloaded my video card drivers once again, that also makes no difference.

If anyone knows a solution, please let me know :)

Greatings,

Etrecz

Maybe you should try cleaning your pc abit. Probably there's a lot of junk inside the cooling fins that blocks airflow, makes them run hotter and then results in thermal throtteling

Is this happening only on H1Z1, or all games?

Can you run 3dMark and post your results?

I did not get a new monitor. But what would be the problem if I did get a new monitor?

Resolution increase would cause a gpu bottleneck

maby u used to run it on 720p before and now 1080p

3dMark Time Spy results.

Those results are par for the course, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

It seems it could either be a game or driver specific issue. Without knowing what all games are affected, it's hard to say exactly. It's possible an update to H1Z1 broke performance.

To rule out the issue being a driver issue, I'd suggest clean loading your drivers with DDU and roll back your drivers to something from mid last year.

I will try to download a new driver for my gpu. Are the 3dmark scores from your pc? If these scores are from your pc, did you overclock your gpu, if you did can you please give me a screenshot of your overclock. Thanks :)

No. Those results are from 3 random computers with the same CPU + GPU combo.

Also, you're welcome. I hope it works out for ya!

Can it also be that one if my drives is not good enough for games?

Which one is better to save games on?

Storage drives shouldn't affect frames per second. The only thing they should affect is loading times and perhaps the time needed to load in textures/objects if the game engine in question uses a streaming function.

In general though, the 7200 RPM drive is better for games.

I am gonna re-download Windows on my 5400RPM drive, and my game on my 7200RPM drive. Then I will download all the drivers and see if the problem is still there.

I will update you if I have more information. :)

But I downloaded Windows again and it did help a little bit. So thank you guys for helping with this problem. I think I am gonna buy a new gpu for my computer. Any thougts of which gpu I should buy?

Glad you got it sorted out a little.

As far as what to buy, that's a bit tougher. What is your current budget? Right now, GPU prices are insane.

Also, do you think you can hold off on upgrading for a couple months? Nvidia should be releasing some new GPUs in the near future.

Without knowing your budget, and assuming you don't want to wait, I'd suggest either a GTX 1050 Ti if you don't do intensive games, or a GTX 1060 6GB, used GTX 980, RX 480, or a RX 580.

A used GTX 980 might be the best option. It performs similarly to the GTX 1060, but should be easy to obtain for a reasonable price.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm gonna upgrade my entire system.

I want to buy the ''Intel Xeon X5670'' processor. Do you think this is still a good processor for gaming in the year 2018?

I also need a new motherboard when I'm gonna buy the new processor, do you know any good but normal priced LGA1366 motherboards?

And when the prices of the gpu's have dropped a little bit, I'm gonna buy a new gpu. I think I'm gonna buy a ''Radeon RX560 4GB'' or something in that price range.

They're ok processors, but unless you can get the Xeon and a compatible motherboard for under $200, I wouldn't do it. Also, I'm not aware of any decently priced 1366 boards. You're at the mercy of the used market on that one.

Anything more than $200, then I would recommend either a Ryzen 5 1600 or an i3-8350k.
