Hello there!

First time builder here.

I am saving my money to build a new gaming computer. However I would like to use some of my old hardware laying around to test the waters and make sure I get a feel for building to make sure I don't mess up any of the new parts I order in the future.

I have an old PC that I still have the HDD to that has all my files and Windows 10 installed on it. Unfortunately I do not have the Windows 10 key or Windows on a USB drive.

I came across a used PC on Craigslist that I would like to take the MOBO and CPU from and install my old HDD to it.

How would I go about installing that MOBO into my old chassis using my old HDD? I assume it's not as easy as plug and play...

It is, just put all in and boot from the HDD, you should be fine in 90% of all cases, at least from my experience

More like 99%. The only time Ive ever had an issue is when I got the windows glitch that rejects the boot device.

To make it 100%, look at how the hard drive in the old PC talks to Windows (IDE, AHCI, RAID) and ensure the new motherboard's BIOS is set the same way.

This used to be a much bigger issue on Win7 and below, but 10 has (mostly....) solved that.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

While I enjoy messing with old stuff as much as the next dude, I wouldn't worry about messing up your PC hardware. People overestimate how delicate these things are. Caution is always advised, but don't be too worried.

i5 6600k and GTX 1070 but I play 1600-900. 1440p BABY!

Still, don't put too much faith in my buying decisions. xD
