So I was hoping by this time to be posting a completely different topic asking for feedback on my finally finished PC, but I made a rookie mistake and lost some hardware:|

I had 2 x3 (x4 ?) SATA cables running from PSU, one for Corsair Commander Pro along with Lighting Node and the other cable for HDD and SSD.

So here's the story. I replaced my RMx 650 with a EVGA G3 550 but during installation I accidently left SATA cables from Corsair and plugged them into the EVGA PSU (the cables connecting Commander and Node and the second one connecting HDD and SSD). Corsair Commander Pro was the first to go with a nice stream of smoke and nothing else seemed to have happened. System did not crash or anything else, I just quickly turned off the PSU at its source. That is when I decided to swap back to RMx and shorted the power in my appartment. Of course before doing that, I unplugged the Commander and Node.

Later I RMA'd both PSU's just to be safe and it happened again with a brand new RMx 650. After that power outage, I finally decided to see whether some other component got damaged, so I started with major components, needles to say, all worked fine. No damage to CPU, GPU, RAM, and hopefully motherboard. However upon a recent stable boot my HDD that was connected via a DIFFERENT SATA cable was dead, the SSD that I currently have is also connected to the very same cable but is still alive, for now.

(!) The power outages happened as soon as I actually turned on JUST the PSU WITH connected cables to components. The PC itself was "off". Nothing happened when I plugged the PSU into the socket without any components connected.

This morning before leaving for work, I called electrician to check on the outlets - all was working properly. So I simply unplugged the HDD (it's dead now) and turned on the computer for the first time. It worked, for a minute. Then another blackout...

And finally this brings me to my final questions:

1. Can the SSD, while still working, be shorting the PSU? Mind you it was connected to the same cable that killed the HDD.

2. While the motherboard seems to be OK, should I look into replacing it?

3. Have you ever screwed up this badly?:)

Components:

Spoiler

Gigabyte B350 Gaming 3

Ryzen 5 1600

G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2*8GB @ 3000MHz

3 x HD120 fans that might be dead along with 4 LED strips

Corsair RMx 650 at the moment only

And if this makes it any better, I never killed a single piece of hardware before. So a quadrouple (at best) kill seems like a good start for a first try:)

I have never ever heard of a SSD shorting a PSU... So that's highly unlikely. This is some funky stuff and I really don't have an explanation as to how it happened. I will say that if the MOBO works OK there shouldn't be and issue with that.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

Exactly! It can't be the PSU for sure, as it's brand new. Hence why I'm here.

Forgot to add something.

I did also turn on the system at the end but without any drives connected and just went around UEFI (if you can call it that on the Gigabyte motherboards) to see if voltages were fine and whether I'd get another crash, but everything was fine and no power outages.

Alright, time for an update!

I am now 99% certain that the drive was causing power outages as once I fully disconnected it, system boots and works perfectly fine. Granted, I lost all my data:|

But, I still would like an explanation on why would the drive cause a PSU to short but the SSD that was connected via the same cable would not only survive but not cause any issues.

And hey, huge props to both EVGA and Corsair for making power supplies that can actually withstand that and not kill all the components!
