Ok, so recently my laptop has been having this problem where the system takes 100% disck randomly, locking up the PC. Im using a 5400RPM 1TB dd  (plan on upgrading but kinda broke atm). When i upgrade i will get an M.2 ssd and install windows 7 cause i think this is a windows 10 problem. any ideas?

is a windows 10 problem and the reason i went back to win 7.

no idea how to fix it other than getting rid of windows 10.

happens even after a fresh install. even when windows 10 is installed in a virtual machine.

Open "Perfmon" and go to the Disk tab, and look in the File activity tab. That will tell you what the files are that're being used.

Windows 10 is known to run exceptionally bad on 7200rpm mechanical drives. Running it on a 5400rpm drive is just making a bad situation worse. Get *any* ssd and you will be in a wayyy better situation.

sums up windows 10... i wouldn't have it if this laptop didn't come with it. It is pretty much malware...

if the laptop came with windows 10 and has an anything-lake CPU or does not have any windows 7 drivers you are screwed

I can probably find a way. Win7 without drivers is better than 10 lel

missing drivers can be a pain in the arse.

imagine no sound, no usb 3 (wich happened to be the only usb ports on the damn laptop) no wifi and also no wired network so you can't even look for any drivers when you take your laptop and sit on the floor right next to your router

... and then i've heard about random bluescreens and whatnot when running windows 7 on anything-lake CPUs so ... i wish you the best.

ive used my n450 powered laptop with no drivers and it was fine. Anyway, win 10 drivers might work on 7...

Well, do you want help, or do you want switch to Windows 7?

When System has issues, it means:  Driver.

You have a driver issue. That is the problem you face.

Now the question comes into, which driver? And that is the fun part. You could clean install, or do a factory restore. Or you can spend time uninstalling and re-installing drivers.

The usual culprits are:

  • Chipset
  • SATA Controller, if you use an extra one than the built-in one from the chipset
  • Audio
  • Network (Wireless and Wired, if any)

If it needs messing about with drivers, i might just put up with it for a week or two until my ssd arrives.

Why, what is the problem with that?

You'll have a lot more problem than that.

  • Possible CPU incompatibility
  • None functioning webcam
  • Audio issues
  • Poor high-DPI/display scaling support (can't fix)
  • Poor touch screen support (if you have one)
  • Poor ink support (if you have a digitize pen)
  • No full UEFI support

(Not to mention the mass set of features of Windows 8 and 10 you'll be missing., although "not a problem to fix", hence why it is out of the list, but just wanted to mention it.)

No great things are ever easy. If i can get past these problems, then i will have a much better OS. If not, then i guess windows 10 will be making a return...

SNIP

Back then I had that problem myself but it was with a very specific brand of SSD (Samsung 840 Evo) that had an incompatible firmware with an windows 10 version higher than 10240.

On 10240 it would work like a charm, past that it would freeze on a fresh install within minutes on full HDD usage yet nothing was using said SSD.

Had to flash firmware to latest version to finally fix this issue
