Hi all!,

I have a Mushkin M.2 SSD 120GB and as soon as I install something it is getting super hot and crashes. I don't know how hot it is getting because I can't run a test because it will crash. All I know is that I almost burned my finger when I touched the SSD.

My device is an Acer Aspire V5-591G-58Z3

I hope someone can help me :)

Does it have any contact to any heatsink or is it just laying in there?

Hmm, so it doesn't touch a heatsink. Is there any airflow in that area? I would suppose the controller is just getting too hot because it isn't cooled

No there is no airflow on the inside. Is it normal that a SSD is getting extreme hot?

m.2s are getting hot, or more the controllers and then they start to throttle or shut off. It's the same with e.g. you CPU. And if they are put under longer load and there isnt any cooling they just overheat

Sadly i don't know any way to lower the temperatures as it's so far away from the heatsink and there's no airflow

If it has venting and it would push some air through the area it could, but to eliminate it you would also have to put a heatsink on it

I've seen M.2 drive hit 114C+ and still run fine. If possible I would see if you can install a tiny case fan above the M.2 drive which should help remove some of the heat.

I have no idea if these would work or not since it's installed in a laptop. They should since they just snap to the M.2, these should help decrease the temp allot more.
