It seems that you just have a bum drive. Whenever I've encountered drives that were going bad with that low number of hours being powered on, it's been a bad drive. I have drives with more than 6 years of abuse that are fine.

Hey guys

today i decided to pull out a 2TB drive from an old computer.

however, when i tried to convert it into gpt/mbr, it threw a io error at me

I really have no idea whats going on and I need help.

Thanks :)

It's a free program that can show the health of your hard drives. It's wonderful.

For situations such as yours, I use a piece of software and it works great.  The best parts are that it is easy to use along with being FREE.  A lot of people suggest using the regular windows commands like diskpart, etc., but I find using this is better for me because I don't have to worry about  spelling the command correctly or using the correct commands like format, partition, etc.  Give it a shot, if you don't like it or it doesn't work for you, then just remove it.

It could mean anything. Could you post a screenshot of the window?

If you receive a yellow caution box, that is a true indication there are problems with the drive.  I don't remember right off the top whether or not it shows what the problems are, but I think it does, just not sure.  Of course you must understand that if you partition the drive, ALL the information on the disk such as documents and photos will be lost.

One of the things that software will do is scan the drive for errors.  You may want to consider doing that before going any further with saving data to the drive.  Need to make sure that all errors and bad spots are identified prior to using.  If the drive is experiencing large amounts of failures or bad spots, it could be a clear sign the drive is failing and it is time to consider a replacement.

I think youre right. AOMEI's test is telling me that every sector is bad. Time for a new drive I guess

From looking at the pic, you need to scroll down.  Your pic is not showing all the information available.  One of the things you should be looking at are items B5, B6, B7 and BB.

B5 - Program Fail Count (Total)

B6 - Erase Fail Count (Total)

B7 - Runtime Bad Block (Total)

BB - Uncorrectable Error Count (Total)

Oh yea, also....C3, and C7.

C3 - ECC Error Rate

C7 - CRC Error Count

Ah, good pic.  Looking at the pic, you can see that items C5 and C6 are yellow.  This indicates where the problems with the drive are located.  If you're getting a SMART warning with pending sectors, that typically means your disk can't (or isn't) reallocating sectors correctly. This disk can probably fail hard at anytime.  I checked both of the items marked in yellow and my humble opinion is this drive is getting ready to fail.

I would seriously consider backing up all the data on this drive that you want to save as soon as possible.  Just looking at Newegg, you can get a 2Tb drive for a decent cost.  But, yea......  Need to back up that drive and seriously consider a replacement.

Yeah, it's the sad part about using mechanical drives. They fail.

Sorry about the bad information on your drive but I didn't want to give you any bad information and then later on the drive failed and you lost everything on it.  Back it up somewhere soon as possible and you'll be alright when you can replace the drive.  Glad to help, Good luck.
