Weird laptop temps

I need some advice, the fanspeed on my HP Elitebook 8460p ramps up and down like crazy. At startup it looks fine at 50 degrees Celcius, but when starting Windows Update it goes from 50 to 90 to 70 within a split second. While the load is less than 20%. Is the sensor messed up or should I open this baby up and add some new thermal paste?

New Thermal paste application may not be a bad idea, but that sounds normal as it ramps up the clocks and load on the chip..

How old is the laptop?

you might want to clear out the dust on the fans!

It has a 2nd gen i7 so I think at least 6 or 7 years. But you're right, I'll open her up.

After removing a layer of dust and applying some new thermal paste, I'm now at a stable 65 degrees under full load!
