Hp z420 problems

Hey, soo I've got some issues with my new/old hp z420 workstation. I just bought it and slapped in my powercolor hd 7970 to see whats up with it. And no post/display I can't tell which. The graphics card wants an 8 pin and a 6 pin pcie power, and only 2 6 pins are plugged in. I thought it would atleast have display.

I have another card I'm going to try, it doesnt need pcie power cables so it should work.

I currently don't know what version anything is, so if you have suggestions that would be great.

Thank you.

Ok I need to upgrade the psu I think, because my nvs 285 fires up fine. Thank you kameshss, so what psu should I get because the motherboard seems to have like a 18 pin power and an 8 pin cpu power

I found some 24 pin to 18 pin converters on Amazon. But not sure how reliable they're. I think it'll work.

Research on this https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/HP-z420-motherboard-18-pin-layout/td-p/5835021

Also, Does your current PSU have molex connectors? Because, there are converters for Molex to PCIe power like this https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-2-Pack-8-Pin-Molex/dp/B01DV1Z428/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1520059990&sr=8-3&keywords=molex+to+pcie

Check it out first.

Hi got a z420 as well. Gtx 1080ti connected. I use a molex to 8 pin which has worked fine around 4 years. My 780 worked fine on it as well.  I use it usually for heavy rendering sessions. Sometimes a few days up to a week or so.

  • 2 weeks later...

I received the adapter and it seems to be working fine

Thanks for the help

But I've run into another issue where only 3 of my sata ports work the 2 sata III and the top sata II port

I don't know if you guys can help out with that but I figured I'd try
