Im writing this for a friend.

A friend of his who is more a software guy build the system for him.

His system specs are as follows:

CPU: i5 7400

Mobo: MSI Z170 PC-Mate (he now knows that was a bad choice for his processor)

GPU: Zotac GTX 1050ti Mini 4gb

RAM: 2x8gb 3200 3000mhz GSkill Tridentz  RGB

SSD: toshiba q300 120gb

HDD WD blue 1tb

His mobo and ram seem to have weird problems and he seems to have random freezes every so often with the reset button not working forcing him to power down the system and reboot.

mobo:

Motherboard speaker does not output sound (works perfectly fine in my system)

ram:

He told me that he had some problems with his ram and i told him he could test it in my system and get this:

I put both sticks of ram in my system in slots 2 and 4 and it doesnt boot, so i ttry one stick and it works. I then put the second stick instead of the first and it doesnt boot AND the reset button no longer works.

I then try both sticks in the REVERSE slots and it boots with 16 gigs detected.

Once we test it again in his system it shows the same behaviour, but later the bad stick completely gives up and stops working.

I also installed malwarebytes and CCleaner on his pc and ran both and had them delete everything unnecessary aswell as uninstalling every programm that was suspicious.

So after all that i told him to run with only the working stick of ram and contact amazon customer support or GSkill directly.

But...

Even with the one stick of ram he STILL has random freeze issues.

Could it be the motherboard?

I already recommended him an asus b250 model in case he has to get a new mobo.

Im thinking that he has to get a new motherboard but i am unsure.

what do you guys think the issue is?

Have you checked the frequency the memory has while the PC in on, in the bios? It might be a frequency related issue for those freezes.

Tell him to go and RMA the RAMs and maybe get other ones.

PS: The reset button is not working because the connector is placed wrongly. Inverse it in the port and it might work.(been there done that).

PS2: Why on earth would you suggest him getting a b250 mobo? Get a damned z270 and give him room for future upgrades.

Sounds weirdo that combination with bad-ass ram that costs ~$250 and just a $100-$150 motherboard.

his ram is running at 1077 mhz and is not 3200 but 3000 mhz sorry.

PS RE: The reset button works when the system runs normaly

PS2 RE: he doesnt have much money and earns very little. It took him about 4 months to save up for his rig which now isnt an option anymore.

And he had other ram before his gskill kit but hes an rgb fan so he saved up for it.

Have you tried using his ram for a while in your system and check if there are still some issues with both sticks? If yes then his motherboard is the pain in the ass in this situation.

i did try his ram sticks in my system and i also made sure to stress test it to about 15.6 gb used and it had no problems.

but putting it back in his system worked for a while before one of the sticks gave up.

should i test the sticks again in my system?

I don't think the sticks are causing the issue. I suppose the mobo is damaged.
