@tjcater Hmm... I really don't want to unlock my bootloader but thanks for letting me know you are ready to help! KingRoot seems to be a bad application but what about other one-click root applications?

Sorry to say this, I am not aware of a single root method for the Nexus 5x that works without needing to unlock the bootloader. (Anyways I haven't seen any indication that Kingroot works on the Nexus 5x beyond the 7.0 preview)

@tjcater Also, should iRoot or KingoRoot be trusted? https://drfone.wondershare.com/root/android-root-tool.html

These tools are notorious for the malware they can carry.

Hello,

I've came to the conclusion that I want to root my Nexus 5x. Upon having this phone for 1 year, I think it's a pretty dencent phone for its price but I really want to customize the Operating System.

I'm using KingRoot to root my Nexus 5x because I've used it before, on a cheaper phone, and it worked.

I'm using the Windows application for rooting since it the android version was stuck on 1% all the time but I realized that I've a question: Since I'm using a phone from google and I receive montly updates, will I still be able to update my rooted phone without it losing its root capabilities? And also, I've been having some strange issues with connecting my phone to my Windows 10 Computer. It starts charging but nothing shows up indicating that the phone can transfer files. I can't even see it in the Windows Explorer... Since I'm updating my Android OS right now, I hope that'll be fixed.

I'm on Android Oreo.

Hope you can help me answering this question that I have and if you have gone through the same problem with the USB cable please let me know.

Thanks!

NEVER USE KINGROOT.

Just google and you'll see how sketchy it actually is and it's legit malware.

Also, it's Google phone and there are definitely way better guides for that specific phone on xda forums! :)

@Yoola Alright, so what do you recommend? I don't want to install something that will require me going to the recovery mode on my phone because that seems like a "dark" place. Please help me!

If one-tap apps don't work, you'll probably be working with ADB (Android Drivers for PC) and your recovery. You'll have to be committed. I don't have a Nexus 5x, so I can't help you with specifics, but I'd suggest looking at forum below. XDA has lots of Android development for the 5x and many people willing to help.

Oh thanks! Should I just ignore the other steps and do the 6th step on "How to Root"?.

No, you need to have bootloader unlocked. It even says 'Prerequisites'.

You need to unlock your bootloader and flash TWRP recovery (a recovery way easier to use than the stock Google one.) After you install TWRP everything gets easier.

Okay so can you guys just tell me which steps to follow? Or should I just do everything? It's rather confusing... @Yoola @Kobathor

How is it confusing if everything is explained step by step. Just take some time, read through few times and then follow bullet by bullet.

You need to do everything. Warning: Unlocking the bootloader will reset Android to factory (Contacts, apps, etc)  Disclaimer: I'm running lineageOS with Magisk root.

@tjcater Oh... I don't want to do that... Can I just follow this guide then? https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/root-android-oreo-nexus-5x-6p-0176736/

Do I really need to unlock the boot loader to root? I just want to root, not flash any OS or kernels or something like that...

Maybe there's a different way? With KingRoot I clicked on the button once and it rooted it for me without having to do any bootloader unlocker...

Pro tip: If you don't know what you're doing or understand the risks, don't root. LG will not accept a device with an unlocked bootloader for replacement if it boot loops.

Keep in mind that once you root, many apps like Netflix may break. You will also receive OTA updates, but they may remove or break root privileges. I would suggest that you install LineageOS 15.1 for your Nexus 5X to receive community updates and integrated root support (see developer options).

That article also requires a bootloader unlock. All you need to do is backup all your user data before you do it. It takes some time and some tech know-how if you really want to root your phone.

@Homeless Pineapple I understand but I don't want to install a different Operating System. I just want to root the phone and not install any OS or Kernel or ROM.

Isn't there a way to root without unlocking the boot loarder? For example, this article: https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/root-android-oreo-nexus-5x-6p-0176736/

First requirement it says on that page is that it requires Twrp, which means you will need to unlock your bootloader so yes you need it. Not all phones are set up the same so certain exploits have to be used (In this case the bootloader needs to be unlocked) some phones and versions of android you don't need an unlocked bootloader. What version of Android did your old phone use? Older versions of Android were rooted using different methods which no longer work.

@tjcater My old phone used Android 6.0. Alright this article (https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/root-android-oreo-nexus-5x-6p-0176736/) won't work either then. Is there a different way to root without unlocking the boot loader?

No, on the Nexus 5x you need an unlocked bootloader to even modify the section necessary to run root. Might I ask what do you need root for?

There is no benefit to you not unlocking your bootloader. The Nexus 5X is basically designed to have its bootloader unlocked due to an enormous amount of developer support.

KingRoot and iRoot are your only real options, but they are universally hated. Do not use these applications.

@tjcater For using Substratum. I may even just pay the 1.99€ for the Andromeda (which is basically the same as Substratum but for not rooted users).

@Homeless Pineapple Hmm... I really care about privacy so... I'm not sure what I should do right now. I'm not willing to get my bootloader unlocked and then it boot looping on me.

KingRoot installs adware onto your device and who knows what else. You're trusting a shady company with a lot of your personal information.

iRoot/KingoRoot are ever so slightly better, but there are many reports of unwanted adware being installed on some devices. I wouldn't trust any 1-click root applications due to how much power you are giving them over your device.

Yah that is likely the only simple way for you to go about it. (Note: Android Oreo adopted OMS support through a CLI which is why this now works without rooting, so you might find an alternative, but that's very unlikely as I doubt many would want to reinvent the wheel so to speak)

Is https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 a good option? @tjcater @Homeless Pineapple @Kobathor @Yoola.
