When looking at the Z270 boards, will the current DDR4-2133 RAM memory stick still work if on a board that states it has a DDR4-3800 slots? Or is that just the maximum mhz stick it it can run?

also, will my current 7th gen Intel I5-7400 still be compatible with this Mother board until it is upgraded to an 8th gen I7-8700? and what kind of power supply should I be looking to have just to run this mother board and set up?

p.s. Currently running a GTX 1060 which I'm assuming will work with a Z270, am I wrong to assume that? will be wanting to upgrade to either a 1080 or Titan X

3800 Mhz is maximum memory clock. Anything lower than that will work. Yes, i5 7400 will work on the board, but 8th gen cpu won't - you need Z370 board for that. 1060 is ok.

Edit: Z270 is chipset for overclocking, so there is no reason for you to buy Z270 board unless you are going to buy unlocked K processor.

Why are you looking at Z270? It's a dead platform.

Go AM4 for the long haul

You also would need Z370 to upgrade to Coffee Lake, and I don't know if your i5 would work in that chipset

Coffee lake will add more CPUs into their lineup later this year. If he wants to get that, there is actually a sweet deal on an i5-8600k and a gigabyte gaming 5 z370 motherboard for like $349 on Newegg. At least $150 off.

Z270 will work with the 7400 but not with an 8700. You can't use 7th and 8th gen CPUs in the same motherboard.

I would only use the i5 until i obtained the 8700 then swap the one out for the other, that would be fine yes? and this would now be on the z370 since it is the one compatible for the 8700

It's not even worth buying a new motherboard unless your current one is broken, wait until you can afford a new CPU and Motherboard at the same time, because newer chips might be out that change what you should buy

Also better yet instead of the i7 8700 buy the R5 1600, or R5 2600 in april and save some cash

Are you sure intel won't force people to use Z390 for the 8 core coffee lake chip?

No, like I said, you can't use the same motherboard for them. 7th gen and 8th gen CPUs aren't compatible because the pins have been reassigned.

You would be better off upgrading all at once rather than buying parts one at a time.

well I Appreciate all of the comments and help you guys, I really do. So it sounds like this to me,

"Keep the current set up, then purchase a Z370 along with an 8th gen I7-8700 processor. With the new mother board I'll need a new case as well, as the current case is an mATX mobo case, so i'll likely purchase a large/tall case. Then I'll use the Z370 with the I7-8700, GTX 1060 along with my current 8gb DDR4-2133 (plus an extra 8gb stick I would add) After that I'd upgrade my power supply to a 650 Watt, keep my 1tb Hard Drive, add a 250gb SSD, and then exchange the current gpu to GTX 1070TI. I will add a sound card later to do audio editing ( a hobby for audio production)

Does that sound liker a good build? I will eventually upgrade to a 32gb RAM Memory in the farther future.

The build is fine, but like I said you'd be better off just saving your pennies and buying a whole system at once, or you'll just end up with parts of it being out of date.

The GTX 2070 and Vega refresh cards might be out by the time you get around to upgrading the GPU

And any particular reason you don't want to save some cash with Ryzen?

I heavily considered Ryzen! However I'm looking to also stream off the same system as well as inevitably add a sound card and mbox for some audio production. Intel's core processors at this point I believe to be my best option.

Yea I think this will be the route I do end up taking, however I'm also thinking of a way to keep the i7 cool as I will be overclocking. Would water cooling be the best option or would just a radiator and good fans be ok?

The Ryzen 8 core is likely better for streaming overall as you can split the resources better, 4c/8t for the game, 4c/8t or more for OBS. Not sure anyone has done testing that in depth though.

Or you could hop on the threadripper train and have one of the best possible OBS systems, but that's overkill.

Water cooling is the best if you buy the right parts. However, a Noctua D15 would give you almost the same performance but would cost less and is quieter.
