For the first time, I could hear a fan in my computer that was louder than the normal whir.

It sounded like the CPU fan. I downloaded HWMonitor to monitor speeds and temperatures for my i5 3470. Is this normal for the stock Intel CPU?

It was quite noticeably loud and it's the first time I have heard it. I'm considering getting a new fan. I can get a refurbished H80 for 35 GBP - does the fan speed etc change automatically or is it preset? I don't know a lot about AIO Liquid coolers because I've never thought of them as good value, but at 35 GBP it looks awesome and performs quite well. I've also heard the 3470 can be slightly overclocked?

I'd say thats pretty much normal rpm for little stock fan. I had my old cooler with 92mm fan and old case fan (120mm) installed resently and they run at 1700rpm each. With those little turbines its pretty loud noise. If your mobo allows it, you could try limit fan speed to 70-80% and see if temps get too wild under stress. Aftermarket cooler does same thing and keeps it cooler anyway.
