Hello!

I tried to mod my motherboard (HP Ipiel-la3 https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01746799) so it could take a faster LGA 771 Xeon, even though it is LGA 775. This did not work out, but that is mostlikely because I did not install the microcode for the Xeon. Before I waste all of my thermal paste, has anybody ever owned this motherboard and modded it? I highly doubt it, but it is worth the ask.

I didn't know it was even possible to "mod" a motherboard to allow for a different socket type CPU....

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

If the sockets are electrically compatible, it is definitely possible, as long as there is a way to get the motherboard supporting Xeons. However socket 775 is quite old, so idk how easy it will be to find a compatible (possibly 3rd party) bios for the board. If stability is required, I would buy a board that supports xeons out of the box, or get a different cpu, also bear in mind, ecc memory may be an issue, depenidng on what the processor and MBO supports... idk.

I had quite alot of trouble trying to fiddle around with a old socket 775 hp MBO (actually made by MSI). Be sure to post your results, I'm sure a few people, myself included will be interested.
