GTX 1080 + i7 6770K Poor performance

Drummer611

Hello everyone! I recently changed my rig and I’m disappointed with the performance of it. I play a lot of Overwatch and I’ve been struggling to keep constant 144 FPS. I tried uninstalling my drivers with DDU in Safe Mode and reinstalling, disabled Turbo Mode in my BIOS, reduce graphic quality (I still get FPS drops at Low). All my drivers are up to date according to my manufacturer’s website. My CPU and GPU usage and temps seems normal. I feel like my old rig was performing better than this one and I built it back in 2013.  I play with 144 Hz and 1920x1080. Maybe there’s something I’m messing, does any of you have an idea?

The new rig should be able to maintain the FPS you want.  Are you monitoring GPU and CPU usage?  What about Temps?

Will be losing quite a chunk using one stick of slow DDR4, not saying its the sole issue, but it won't be helping if its on half bandwidth and low speed

That's a good point, there was another post about a 7700K build having FPS issues in overwatch and dual channel RAM was part of the solution.

it's definitely worth investigating, I think op should sell that stick and grab 2x8gb 3000mhz sticks @Drummer611

Is this a new install of windows?

Yes it is.  The one that came installed with my pre-built that is.

Yeah I'm monitoring both when I play on my second monitor and to me they don't seem to be excessive.

How about CPU and GPU usage?  Do you have afterburner installed?

Apparently my Motherboard only supports RAM 2133 MHz.

Here's a screenshot of CAM monitoring when playing Overwatch at Low settings: https://imgur.com/R32MEOR

And here's another with Ultra settings: https://i.imgur.com/bRt6csU.jpg

The issue isn't not the fact that I can't reach good performances either with Ultra or Low settings.  It's that I can't keep a constant FPS.

Exactly, your CPU and GPU are both only at 50% ish load, your GPU is being held back and so is your CPU.

2133mhz is the standard speed for DDR4. However, all boards/CPU's will run faster ram, its called XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) - all XMP sticks have a preloaded memory profile of Speed vs timings which is changed automatically.

Trust me, you need to get faster ram, and 2 sticks of it, as I said, get 3000mhz or faster if you can afford, but don't go too fast as the gains are marginal above 3000mhz

https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20757516226

Below is a quote from a guy in that thread:

"Sadly you need at least 2400 mhz Ram in DUAL-CHANNEL to keep 200 FPS + Forever.

Even with a 1080 and my i7 7700k OC at 4.6 ghz, i was going down 120 - 140 sometimes and is extremelly annoying

So i had reemplace my single-channel 16 gb ram for a dual channel ones to avoid the compatability gamble issue. Now im at 250 + FPS in low all time not even a single time i go down to 200

Get the fastest Ram you can and remember DUAL-CHANNEL only

Look this video as proud"

160 vs 220FPS in that video, same rig, just single vs dual channel, that's the same speed ram as well, not an uplift of almost 1000mhz

Yeah I bought 2x8GB @ 2133 MHz on NewEgg.  Thanks for your recommendation.  I'll report back once I have them installed.
