hearing the system work

McCloud

Recently I've noticed, with my headphones on, I can hear the system working..

always when I perform some heavier action (opening software, importing images in Lightroom etc) I hear a short scratching sound.

no idea how this is possible.. is it the SSD, RAM, CPU or GPU ?

Any engineers here that can clarify this ?

From the above mentioned only the GPU might be a reason.

Other reasons:

- PSU

- HDD if you have one

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x, Cooling: Corsair H100i Platinum AIO MOBO: Asus Strix B450 F GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1080 Founders Edition + Arctic Accelero Xtreme III RAM: 2x8GB ThermalTake ToughRAM White 3200MHz PSU: Corsair RM850x White Storage: 250GB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe CASE: Corsair 275r Airflow White OTHER: White and Orange Cable Extensions ---- MONITOR: Samsung LC32JG5 32" WQHD 1440p VA 144Hz

From where is the sound coming? Try listening a bit and check from where it comes. There are various sounds that may come from the PSU, GPU(fans sometimes), CPU(also fan) or even the hard disk(if you've got one).

 || CPU: Intel i5-8600K || Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212X || Motherboard: Gigabyte Z370 HD3P || GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1050ti OC Windforce 4GB || Memory: 16GB Crucial DDR4 3000mhz || HDD: WD Black 500GB + Seagate Barracuda 2TB || SSD: Samsung 980 1TB || PSU: Corsair VS550 || Case: nJoy Ice Cage || Fans: Segotep Halo Ring RGB ||Monitor: 2x Dell 27" P2717H IPS Full HD || Second Monitor/TV: LG 49UJ620V UHD || Mouse: Logitech G502 || Keyboard: Logitech G810 + Royal Kludge RK84 || Speakers: Philips SPA-5300 subw + Arylic 2.1 + DIY Bookshelves w/ Dayton Audio || Headphones: HyperX Cloud Flight S ||

If it is static noise try to update or roll back your audio drivers and hope that the planets align

This might just be that the audio components on your motherboard is picking up electrical interference from the rest of the components, it depends on your board as a lot of the recent more gaming/expensive ones have a shielded part of the board dedicated to audio parts. This is also why shielded dedicated audio cards used to be a thing in the past.

When I hear scratching all I think of is hard drives and DJs.

Guitars can scratch too (=

Like @Sack said, it could be the audio components getting electrical interference.

There are few kinds of noises coming from PC:

  • Fan motors
  • HDD spinning
  • Coil whine
  • Static/interference
  • Vibrations and air turbulence
