If you want good sound quality you should buy a hifi headphone and a sound card with Dolby Headphone.

buy a soundcard with dolby headphone and then buy the best stereo headphones that you can afford (which would depend on your preferences).

but I'll bite. I love my corsair vengeance 2000

its wireless so I can quickly run to the bathroom during raiding to go drop a deuce or make a sandwich and not miss out on anything in game.... you can even talk to people while you are making toilet babies.

50mm drivers. I love that I can rattle the base of my neck when explosions happen.

super comfortable. I can wear them for days and not get tired of the velour pillows on my head.

cons. eax virtual 7.1 is rubbish to my ears. virtualizing above and below sounds is washed out IMO when a chopper is above you its hard to discern location. I use my headphones for MMO's

the only reason I retain my headset is for the convenience of wireless and being able to quickly run away from my computer and not miss out on a single thing otherwise for FPS shooters I use my ATH AD700's I know exactly where a person is coming from and can get the jump on people before they can aim at me.

I have Logitech G75s and I have to say I'm not a fan of the virtual 7.1. It works, but it didn't cut it for me. I actually found myself to hear my surroundings better in 2.1. Personal preference though. I guess I could recommend these. I've had them for about 2 years and they've been nice. I've received endless amounts of compliments from people saying my mic is super clear. But it does pic up some background noise. Not a lot though. The only thing I don't like about them is how it uses USB. This isn't a problem until I want to use it for another purpose like an MP3 player or if I want to just use the mic and use another pair of headphones for sound.

I'll agree with Aphexx here. I'm very much a stereo headset with good sound card guy, but I wanted a good wireless headset that I could both listen to music with, and Skype with, while moving around my home, so I got a present of a Vengeance 2000 headset at Christmas, and I have to say, I love it. The surround sound is (as expected) absolutely dire with music, but works quite well with movies and TV. The general audio quality is very good (much better than I was expecting to be honest) especially when the "Reference EQ" setting is used. Range for me is about 25 feet, through three thin walls and a door.

Hifi headphones + mic would be 10,000 times better than any shitty g4mer 7.1 headset. If you want positional awareness, get akg's (q701 or k702). No headset is worth the money, it's all overpriced rubbish.

Well then its not a 7.1 surround headset. Virtual is using the soundcards software to make it seem like u are listening to 7.1

I would suggest avoiding wireless headsets if u want sound quality.

I never tested wireless but i spent like 3 months searching reviews fr the perfect headset and most reviews told me to stay away from wireless unless i absolutely needed it.

HiFi headphones with mic is gd choice but if u want a headset then 7h is gd sound quality but many reviews claim they break very easily (1 side would apparently die after like 3 months), I use the pc350s and they are very nice. Comfortable, easily fit over ur ears, they are fully enclosed so u get real immersion in the game. The padding means they get a little hot afetr a while tho.

I also think the 7.1 works very well with my xonar d2x.

Well, i don't have a lot of experience with sorroundsound headsets, but i know that you actually don't need one. Try searching this on Youtube: virtual barbershop. In order to get the best experience use a pair of stereo headphones. I think that is proof enough that you sont need a sorroundsound headset. it's not that i hate sorroundsond headsets, but you actually don't need one. Ã can recommend you to watch the latest livestream.

wireless has come a long way. even look at linus' review of the parrot zik. I'd call that a full endorsement of wireless by linus.

yes there is some audio compression used to stream sound to the headset but its very negligible. even less than that of mp3 vs flac.

in my opinion the only reason to subject yourself to a headset and take that hit in audio quality for using that headset is to have wireless capability.

however for wired applications then the choice is ALWAYS audiophile headphones and mic. wired gamer headsets are rubbish compared to audiophile headphones.

stay away from turtle beach wireless. it's headsets for the console masses.

its taking the audio signal and artificially widening the sound, to me it sounds like artificial echo effects (although highly concentrated in in certain areas of the audio spectrum)

why are these used on gamer headsets?

gamers that play first person shooters need to be able to hear where opponents are in relation to them and react accordingly. being able to hear which direction and how far away opponents are not only in left and right terms but above and below you as well. 3D for your ears.

basically virtual 7.1 is mimicking what a good open air designed audiophile headset gives you. look for keywords like soundstage. basically they are headphones with grills and vents in the back overclock.net recommends the audio technica ad700 which I own myself I find that I turn off the 7.1 virtualizers on my soundcard when I use open air headphones because the ad700 does soundstage better.

if you want to hear in 3D get an open air headphone like the audio technica ad700, AKG 601 701 Beyer Dt800 sony sa3000. get soundstage unaltered and unfiltered don't get artificial 7.1

caveat:

open air headphones allow sound to leak both in and out. people in the room with you will be able to hear what you are hearing and you will be able to hear everything in the room with you.

its not bad, it is wonderful even, if you have an audio setup that lacks soundstage. however if you do have true soundstage virtual 7.1 feels artificial and lacking
