Increasing ram

I currently have 8gb of ram in two sticks of 4. Am I able to add a single stick it 8 or do I have to stay with the 4s unless I replaces the 4s with two sticks of 8.

 

question is can I mix and match 4s and 8gbs or not?

You definitely can, as long as your mainboard has enough slots. You won't be able to run them in dual channel, though. If you're concerned about your mainboard not supporting potential new ram, I'd suggest going to the manufacturer's website and looking up what's supported...

I think that highly depends on the ram you want to buy and therefore pricing. If there's a good deal for some second-hand DDR3, why not? But if you're running DDR4 and/or don't want to buy used, I think you should just buy one, as this would yield a better price to performance ratio...
