I recently received a couple unwanted, old desktops: 2 Dell Optiplex 745's and a Dell Vistro 220. I have decided I want to use some or all of their parts to make something better. I do not know which one has the better cpu, motherboard, etc. If I could please get a couple opinions of which component is best of the options, I would be very grateful.

Some additional details: the optiplexes have different service tags: 35hhpc1 and 4nfd2d1. Does this mean they have different configurations, or is it just weird for no reason?

I can find out the parts easily enough, I just need advice as to which one is better

we can't exactly give you advice on that until we know the specs.

Service tags on Dell machines are sorta like a VIN code for a car. Punch it into the support? section of the website and it'll tell you the factory config as well as what driver's you'd need. Obviously your config could have changed since then, so you'd have to run speccy on them both for us to give you any concrete advice as to which one is better.

The basic specs are linked under the names. I need to know which CPU and which motherboard is better.

for all we know, the guy who gave you those PCs could have changed everything in the rigs. just run speccy and tell us the specs from there.

For all we know they could have entirely different shit in them. Can't give you a solid answer unless you put in a tiny amount of effort.

Vostro: intel 7300  2x1024 mb RAM. g45m03 board

After typing it all out, it seems it is up to the motherboard. Is one better? Is it better for it to be newer or have more DIMM slots?

One in the Vostro probably supports faster CPUs, but other than that neither one is really better than the other.
