Project Genysis

Hello all. I’m new to the forums, and I’ve been out of the tech world for a while. I’ve been flooding myself with article after article, video upon video ranging from; Tom’s hardware, LTT, Paul’s Hardware, UFD, and many more.

I built my first PC back in 2008. Now 10 years later I’m building my next. I’ve ordered all the parts and I intend to post updates with pictures in the future. Parts are ordered and in the mail. I’m just reeeaaaallly excited! Lol

While knew I didn’t know a whole lot about PC building back then, I’ve realized now that I was really clueless then. I’ll first list my current build I’m making then show you what I have.

Genysis:

  • Board - ASRock x370 Killer Sli/ac
  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 1700(currently just going with stock cooling)
  • RAM - G.SKILL Trident RGB 16gb (2 x 8gb) DDR4 3200
  • Graphics Card - MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6g Gaming X
  • PSU - EVGA 850 G3 modular
  • Case - be quiet! Dark Base 900 pro black/silver
  • SSD - Samsung 960 evo 250gb m.2
  • HDD - Toshiba x300 4TB
  • Monitor - Samsung C24F390 Glossy Black 24” 4ms widescreen curves led/lcd with AMD freesync
  • For some extra fun - Thermaltake riing 3pc RGB 120mm fan set with control.

I will list my first PC build and it’s upgrades here later.

All for now. Please feel free to give suggestions on water cooling, fan upgrades, etc. I do plan on getting a couple dual cards that can run either crossfire or SLI later.

Thanks!

I’ve added a photo of the progress. It’s all built now, but I haven’t taken the time to get all the photos just yet.

If you're planning on overclocking that CPU, I would recommend a beefy air cooler from Noctua like this one. If you like your PC quiet, an AIO from a reputable company like Corsair could be a good option, with the right mounting bracket for an AM4 socket. (If your case has radiator support, of course.)

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

Got any questions about my system or peripherals? Feel free to tag me (@bellabichon) and I'll be happy to give you my two cents.

PSA: Posting a PCPartPicker list with no explanation isn't helpful for first-time builders :)

Pretty good setup; however, I'd really recommend not going with SLI. Nowadays, most games don't see any benefit from it - some can even see losses.

Notes:

  • PSU is good - a Tier 1.
  • RAM and GPU prices are high, so if you can buy used - I'd recommend it.
  • The stock cooler for the 1700 is alright and should do you fine unless you overclock
  • I personally would stay away from Thermaltake due to some of their business practices; however, that's your choice.

I got it for a total of $424. I did add the 4 year extended warranty for $55. Otherwise I would have got it for $370

Thanks I will look into that! I do plan on ramping it up, but I will need those upgrades before I do.

I’ve been reading a lot about how SLI has just gone down the drain. I probably won’t do any SLI but I haven’t heard anything negative really about the crossfire. Is it facing the same issues?

I'm curious as to why you're recommending the D9L. Sure, it's $20-30 cheaper than the D14/D15/D15s but it has a much lower cooling potential - 40 CFM compared to 120/135/70 CFM.

From what I understand, both Nvidia and AMD are moving away from multi-GPU in general. I'm also taking this to mean that game developers will be moving away from it as well. Why would they spend extra time for a modification that would only be used by few?

Overall, I'd just recommend upgrading your single GPU. I'm not sure that game devs will add compatibility with multi-GPU in the future.
