Ok, redo the stick but this time use Universal USB Installer and in it there's an option for Dban, select it and see if it works.

Another option would be if you still have an optical drive, to make a bootable disk and boot from that.

If you want to format them, why not do it through Windows?

Honestly I've never see that before when making a DBan stick. Did you managed to get it working with Universal USB Installer?

Oh another program that can low level format drives is HDDGuru Low Level format tool. You can install it in windows so it will work without problems. Downside to it is that the free version is limited to 50mb/s.

A normal format just tells the os that its empty, but the data is still there. There's another type called low level format, where it wipes the data completely.
