Help with starting file sharing server

I am working on a file sharing server for private file sharing. I am setting it up to where I can access it from the internet and external network. Perhaps also have the ability for multiple users and a web interface. I just have no clue how to do all this (minus port forwarding and actually building the unit). With all this its most likely gonna be a Linux server. Should I just use Samba? Any suggestions or thoughts? Apologies if this is in the wrong section

great video, on the basics. note you do want a decent upload speed like 100mps or faster

video seems to be about building a virtual host, which I do not want to do. I am wanting to create a file hosting machine that runs off a home computer. I am aware of risks and connection issues but I would prefer it that way. Maybe I might be able to get away with using Kodi on ubuntu server with an advanced file explorer add on? This doesnt necessarily need to be super advanced, just to work.

you beat me to it haha i've been using OMV for a little while now and love all the functionality built in. with that being said this is the only server OS i've ever used haha
