Further upgrade

Go to solution Solved by asand1,

Welcome to the Forum.

Depends on what you want to with the system, the X5650 and X5680 is capabale of 288Gb RAM whereas the W3690 is only capable of 24Gb. I am not sure about the PCIe lane count but it may be higher as well. The X5650 will OC to 4Ghz, I believe @Ground claims the W3690 has an unlocked multiplier and should go even higher. GTA will use all 12 threads of my X5680, and only uses about 50% of each while pegging my GTX 1080. There really is no need for you to upgrade as it would be more of a side grade, Just OC and enjoy.

Currently using a W3690 on a Rampage 3 extreme mobo.

1: Is there any CPU upgrades without replacing the motherboard?

2: can one overclock a W3690 like the i7-990x?

3:  When will this configuration be obsolete? ( excluding grapics card, ram and other stuff since those can be upgraded without the need to change a mobo )

4 : Is there any bottleneck with the 10th series graphics cards?

Any answers or discussions are appreciated

1. Yes, to the Xeon 5000 lineup. X5650 is a economical price.

2. Should be able to

3. Depends on what you do with it.

4. Depends on model. The range of graphics cards in most series goes from really junky ones that a core 2 quad wouldn't bottleneck, and really high end ones that a modern i5, even i7 would bottleneck.

1. Sorry but i don't see the X5650 is better than w3690, i've found a CPU namely X5698 with a High base clock but with only 2 cores. Doesn't seem to be making many sense.

2. Thank you for you answer. I've tried it with my mobo and it worked.

3. Playing modern games, like GTA 5 , PUBG . But personally not interest in those heavy load game like Rise of the tomb raider, Witcher 3 and so on.

if you prefer like a classification , I like Multiplayer games more than Singleplayer games.

4. Mid end to high-end GPUS. for instance. GTX 1060 / GTX 970 / 780ti and so on

thank you a lot for you reply

Edit: The X5698 have a 4.4Ghz Clock speed. But there doesn't seem to be any info on ark.intel

I recently had a w3680 for testing (already sold it because it clocked worse then my e5649, 4.0 vs 4.4 at 1.4V) and finally confirmed the unlocked multiplier - yes, w3680 and w3690 have unlocked multipliers like the 980x and 990x. Not that that really matters on 1366...

What are you using to cool it? That may be a thing to consider upgrading...
