Decision between hdd's

I have to choose between tow hdd's to fill up my last sata slot. 

Choice 1: 

A 500gb Baracuda 7200RPM hdd which has been in a Cisco 8485DVB television record box for 4 years, hasn't moved and hasn't overheated.

It has been on for 31576 hours and was powered up 26 times, built in 2014.

Choice 2: 

A 320gb Baracuda 7200RPM hdd which has been in a PC, hasn't overheated.

It has been on for 3679 hours and was powered up 1830 times, built in 2008

 

Which hdd should I choose and why?

It's not that simple. Yes, the 500GB has way more "hours" of usage (approximately 3.6 years at 24/7 usage).

But the 320GB drive has A LOT of "power cycles" (the drive spinning up). In many ways, a lot of spin ups is worse for the drive than simply continuing to run.

 

It's 50/50 either way which one is in better shape. I'd check the SMART stats and see if there are any URE's (unrecoverable errors) or reallocated sectors.

Without seeing the SMART stats, your first post is based on assumptions. They might be right, but I would personally not make a decision without seeing the stats.

Both actually look quite good.

 

No Reallocated Sectors, which is the biggest flag of a dying HDD. A few raw read errors on the 500GB drive, but that can be caused by anything, such as a corrupted file, so that's not necessarily indicative of much.

 

The 320GB drive looks to have slightly less wear, overall, but both are in "Good" health. Though a HDD can drop dead on you without warning - but there's no signs that either of these will die anytime soon.
 

If you don't need the extra space, use the 320GB drive. But if you need that extra space, the 500GB drive should be okay.
