Vectoring is used to pull every last meg out of the connection. Unless shes paying for the fasted speeds she can get it mean jack all. A normal VDSL2 modem will work just fine

Hello all you networking gurus, after much searching and research I have discovered that There aren't a whole lot of VDSL modems out there, and I can't find any good info.

I'm looking for a new VDSL2 Vectoring compatible modem for a friend. Price is of the utmost concern. The cheaper, the better. She's not technologically savvy, and the most this connection will ever be used for is streaming Netflix and browsing facebook. I'm looking for somethings that's cheap, simple, and just works. I will probably be the one setting it all up, so initial configuration isn't an issue as long as it doesn't have to be messed with every time the power goes out or something.

ISP is Centurylink if it makes a difference.

Thanks!

This should help you out :)

I've used it before, you can click on the models and they'll tell you which services are compatible.

Yeah I’ve seen that, but none of them say anything abou vectoring, and i know for a fact that they have vectoring.

i also can’t seem to find any of them that are under $150 new.

Any reason why you need vectoring so bad? If all she does is netflix and facebook why the need to pull full performance?

I think, I could be wrong, when they say Bonding on that page and list VDSL they mean Vectoring

My understanding is that if CenturyLink is putting out the "anti-crosstalk" vectoring signal then a regular VDSL modem can't work with that. is that wrong?

Vectoring is noise cancellation. Still in testing phases for most ISPs. I want to test it but im not paying the price for the card to test with for a few extra megs.

No it can, its all backwards compatible. Its the same for enabling SRA on modems, if one side doesnt support it the protocol doesnt turn on. Vectoring is just noise cancellation for more bandwidth and let error corrections.

Oh!! okay. that makes things a lot easier. From my reading on forums and such, people were having issues with non-vectoring modems on services when century link rolled out vectoring.

Centurylink is still testing it. Their problems were probably from vectoring being relatively new (and yes 2016 is new for DSL standards lol)

So I should be fine with a regular old VDSL2 modem. that helps.

Any suggestions on a model?

I only know models I test at work before deploying (Im a DSL engineer for an ISP) so I dont know or test a wide range of them. By far the most stable are Comtrend modems, relatively cheap and their VDSL2 modems kick ass speed wise.

Only problem is you have to order from Comtrend themselves. I would stick with any of the modems on the list @Lurick listed above.

I use this one personally:

https://www.draytek.com/en/products/products-a-z/router.all/vigor130/

Never had any problems with it, it can also be used as a router or as a modem, depending on the firmware you use on it.

Please quote me in any answers to my posts, so that I can read them easily and don´t forget about them. Thanks!

I love spending my time with PC tinkering, networking and server-stuff.
