I am going back and forth between the i9 or the Threadripper (or Zen+ / Zen2).

I need Thunderbolt 3. I hear that Thunderbolt 3 will be available to AMD in the not too distant future, and the gigabyte x399 designare ex has a TB Header, though not much information has been mentioned about it.

If I knew for sure that AMD was going to have it sometime this year, I'd go for the previously mentioned MB and simply add the card later. Especially since I am pretty sure the Zen+ and Zen2 will also work in the same MB, however I am not familiar with Gigabyte and am most familiar with ASUS +/ROG

If I go the i9 route, I am guaranteed to get the Thunderbolt 3 support I want, except I have no idea if the X299 LGA 2066 socket that I'd put the i9-7900X (for example) would also support the i9-8900X (Hypothetical), So while I'd rather go with the AMD, I am feeling I am going to end up with the i9 purely because of thunderbolt.

My time frame for this build is end of February, soooo thoughts?

What's keeping you from adding this to whatever intel MOBO you want?

I'm puzzled why the hypothetical i9-8900X enters into the thinking. If one is contemplating replacing an i9-7900X with one, would it be more cost effective to initially buy a more powerful i9-79xxX cpu?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
