Well AM3 is an older board, but some AM3 boards also support AM3+ CPUs, but not all...

AM3 is a good solid platform. pick up a phenom II 965 or an 1100t and get some good performance for the price ;)

AM3+ is newer and the FX CPU's use it. The FX CPU's are awesome. You want one. Of course I am in no way bias due to having one, but if you want moar power, much fun and many processes as your avatar tells me you do then you want one.
