So I am a developer by day, and as a business we use the AWS platform.  I've only just noticed, that you can also use AWS for personal projects too.  I'd like to get a hobby going, and seeing as I can have my own AWS Instance, I'd like to use that.

I'm a little stagnant on ideas though - so if anyone has any cool ideas for a project to be used on there, please fire away!

Not sure on projects but heroku also give one free instance as well which you can upload to.

Last time I checked, you could get one year free trial with AWS, but you should consider the costs when the year is up. My personal advise would be to use the free year and then move to something else.

I used the free year and it was basically running Windows server and one application with constant stream of like 20kb/s. I didn't think about cancelling it and then I got the bill... It wasn't like crazy expensive, but more than I would have thought and more than a cheap VPS.

I might have done something wrong, but that was my experience.

It all depends on the project of course.

Also, it is hard to give project ideas, without more information. What are your interests, would the project be for you only or are you planning on releasing something to the public. Apps, Web, Desktop?

As i understand AWS is that you Pay for active Time, so if you had a constant stream of 20kb/s it was running 24/7.

AWS works good when you have an Application that only gets used for like a Few Seconds and then doesnt Stream any Data or Computing somthing.

A Friend of mine uses AWS to get Some Informations like a list of links for his APP and then the AWS instance is Sleeping again and it doesnt cost more then a few cents a month or so.
