Hey all :)

Soo, either my motherboard or psu died not that long ago(my cpu, ram, storage devices etc still works perfectly fine) but I sadly don't have a spare psu or motherboard to figure out which one of the components that are dead, or potentially both.

Therefore I'm thinking of just saying screw it and do an upgrade.

I currently have an i7 4790k(works) and a MSI z97s sli krait edition (possibly dead) which are some very capable components, no doubt, though a few years old.

Idk if I should continue on the haswell platform and try to fix it or buy an i7 8700k or amd equivalent.

What do you all think?

Thanks :)

My advice, buy a cheap PSU tester, they're always handy to have around. And the 4790k is still a fine CPU.

If someone has helped you out on the forum don't forget to give them a reaction to say thank you!

Depends on your needs and your budget, really. Do you need/want it, aswell as being able to afford it? If both are true, I'd say why not, go for it.

Ik it's still a very capable cpu, and I am able to jump start my psu, but I've had issues with some of the individual power cables in the 24pin connector not being connected properly(I've tried fixing it myself without any result)

Well, I don't need it the cpu upgrade(but z97s motherboard are far and few between these days) I do want it and I'd be able to afford it in a few months + I'd like some of the new features like usb C and better led integration. But yeah, idk

Well, your psu sounds sketchy, and it'd be much cheaper if you just had to replace that than upgrade, I mean have you seen the price of ram lately? It's highway robbery, prices should (hopefully) start declining in 2H 2018 or if China discovers a price fixing scheme...
