So this was my first PC build, and it was working quite nicely for the past 5 or 6 months until about a week ago. I first encountered this issue after playing a few games of PUBG. The monitor would lose signal and fans would start to go max speed, the GPU fan for sure and not sure about any others. Whenever this happened I would have to force shut down the PC. After this, the same thing would happen every time I loaded PUBG or any sort of graphically intensive program. I looked around the internet and figured it could be a cooling issue (although the GPU never got above 65 degrees C) and adjusted my fan curve to be much more aggressive and the temperature would never rise above 55 degrees C. This seemed to help slightly, and I was able to run some graphically demanding games again, at least for a short time. Today, it started happening with graphic-light games, such as LoL. I then tried downclocking a bit, still believing it to be a GPU issue. Now, the PC just crashes in this manner whenever Windows starts, with the monitor disconnecting and the fans roaring.

Specs:

  • Windows 10 Home 64 Bit
  • ASRock H270M Pro4
  • Intel i5-7600
  • Intel Stock CPU Cooler
  • 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2133 RAM
  • MSI GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING 6G
  • WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD
  • Corsair CX450 450W PSU

Everything is running at stock speeds except for the GPU which I downclocked 300mHz with MSI Afterburner, to no effect.

Currently do not have another GPU on hand that I can test with, whats in this build is pretty much all I've got in terms of components. Thanks for any help, if no one can figure out whats up I will most likely RMA the GPU.

This sounds to me like there's an issue with power draw to the card. Have you tried using a different PCI-e slot on your motherboard or power cable from your power supply? If this doesn't change anything, your best bet is to RMA the card.

@Homeless Pineapple So... its been about a day of it running flawlessly until a few minutes ago while playing LoL. I managed to get it started again after hard resetting, but not sure how long this could last. Do you think it could be an issue with the PCIe slots on the mobo or maybe the PSU? I really have no idea what could be causing this.

I'd check to see if the 24-pin connector on your motherboard is firmly in place.

There is a very slim chance of this being a motherboard issue, but it could be a PSU issue depending on its age. Regardless, if the issue continues to happen, your best bet is to RMA the card, given that you are unable to test other graphics cards.

@Homeless Pineapple If the problem was with the PSU, how likely is it for other components to have been damaged by it? Everything in the PC is only about 6 months old.

Corsair PSUs have a pretty good reputation. I doubt that the PSU caused damage to the motherboard or GPU.
