So i'm getting a new computer in a while and i would like to keep all my files without having to reinstall it. Is it possible to unplug my current hard drives from my desktop and just plug it in into the new computer? Any risk or downside to doing it? And are there any better ways for me to transfer all my files from my old computer to the new one

You can move the drive @keskparane, but it's not a good idea. You'll have driver issues. Do a reinstall and you'll be happier.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

When I did it I didn't have driver issues. Sure I had to install drivers for the new parts but that is also required with a clean install.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

Don't forget to tag or quote in your reply if you want me to know you've answered or have another question.

It's not always an issue, but it can be. I have a Windows 7 install that's been run on everything from Pentium 4 systems to Core i7 machines. I also have a Windows 10 install that fails to boot on anything other than it's original hardware.
