Yup, GTX 980 performs +- 3-4% just like a GTX 1060, so basicly the same.

But it consumes 50% more Power (180 vs. 120w), and has only 4gb Vram, instead of 6.

Edit: Keep in Mind, there CAN be better optimizations for the newer Pascal architecture, increasing the performance gap.

What price do you think is a good deal for a used 970 or 980

Buying the card from certain places avoids the price increase. Managed to order another 1080 for the regular price the other night.

I wouldn’t get a 970 personally but idk like $310-$350

Do you mean australian dollar?

Or you mean 110-150?

Anything more than 130-140 USD is too much for a 970.

Anything more than 180-190~ (maybe 200) for a 980 is too much.

Since a new 1060 6gb should be <300 dollar.

american, USD, becase of mining all cards price raised, from manufacturers and being resold online.

looking on ebay $330 is what 980s are selling used for right now. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=gtx+980&_sacat=0

or buy a new one for like $470 if its in stock (most aren't)

cards have been this expensive for awhile now

tbh, 330 dollar for a 980 is an incredibly fail buy.

...... Unless you are ONLY after Mining.

New doesn't count, the 9xx series is EoL (End of Life) --> prices skyrocket for no reason. That's how it works. You can see something like that for many different products.

But i'm from Germany, so... also heared, in other countries prices from everything did skyrocket MUCH more than here.... (GTX 1060 went from 280 to 330€~).

1070 ti is still at <500 as custom.

A 970 is just fine. The 1060 is barely 3% better than it, at least until VRAM comes into play. Seriously though, OC a 970 and it'll sit just ahead of the 1060. As for the 980, it's a great GPU, a good 10% better than a 1060, just consumers more power. It'll have no problem running games at maxing settings 1080p.

Unfortunately, no. Ebay's the best option. Since they're not produced anymore, nobody sells them new. Ebay's not too bad though, I've only ever purchased 50ish dollar games on there, about 10 times but not once have I been dooped. They have a very strict and reliable refund policy too. If you get screwed, you're pretty much guaranteed your money back. It's so lenient that a lot of buyers receive their item, claim it's not what they paid for, than getting refunded whilst keeping the product, which is why there's a buyer rating system as well. Just look for a gpu, and check the persons profile. It'll show all their reviews, what items were sold, hold old the account is, what else they have for sale, etc. Just stick within US and Canada and you'll be fine. China however, has a lot of fake gpus on Ebay, so if it says China, don't touch.

What is the max amount that you'd pay. So far Im seeing them hitting th MSRP of what GTX 1060 3gb are.

I'm talking Canadian prices here, I'd pay 220 for a 970, and 250 for a 980. The 3gb 1060 isn't just less vram, they cut the cuda cores too, so it's a good 15% slower than a 6gb 1060 (and 970), so paying close to 3gb 1060 price on a 970 is an alright deal. In today's market, I'd go for it for sure.

With the rising gpu prices,it seems amost impossible to find a good 1060 6gb for my budget. Would it be better to buy a used 970 or 980? If so,do they still keep up somewhat with the 1060?

the GTX 980 is similar to the GTX 1060 6gb only with less memory, the GTX 980 if you overclock can even be a bit faster than most 1060's in games. if you can find one within your budget it's a good card to buy.

Watch this video, it's a large data pool of how well the 970 performs compared the the RX 480 and GTX 1060, along with a bunch of other GPUs. As you'll see, it's right at the 1060, sometimes surpassing it with an overclock :)

And well, Ryzen 5 1600 or i5 8400 would be an awesome way to go, if building new. If you're buying used, look for 'Optiplex' pre-builts on Ebay. You can find ones with i7 3770s and i5 2500ks for 150-250$. Throw a 500w PSU in there, and you're good to go with the gpu you choose :)

I have seen that video, and that is what made me look at the 970. On a side note, if you had to decide between the 970 (used) or r9 290 (new) ($289) which would you pick?
