Hello all.

I bought my main build components (8700K CPU, mainboard, memory, GFX) abroad and in 3 weeks I will be flying back to home, where I intend to fully build the system (where I have the intended case, PSU and CPU fan). I want to test the components out as early as possible so I can return them if faulty, but I don't want to fully build the system abroad. I have access to a test PSU and an old CPU fan for a different socket.

Do I face a significant risk to by testing out the CPU with an incompatible fan and no thermal paste?

My plan is to jerry-rig the fan to the CPU and run the system for 3-4 minutes, just to ensure it POSTS.

Looking forward to seeing your opinions and ideas.

It could be okay considering the CPU wouldn’t have much load, BUT the 8700k is an extremely hot CPU, no thermal paste etc. *could* harm it.

If you really want to test it out I would buy some thermal paste (it’s cheap...) and a small, compatible fan. It would cost you around $20 for having peace of mind.

you are fine, i have done worse things than have a cooler thats just the wrong socket. you should be able to POST just fine as long as the cooler sits on the CPU somewhat OK

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
