I'm deciding to swap out my 6600k for either the i7 coffeelake or a ryzen 7  1700. I'm swapping to get 1080p 60fps stream and game but i can't seem to make a decision.

Go for Ryzen. More cores to start with and more down the line. Having 16 threads on the 1700 gives you enough to stream, encode, and play demanding games.

if you game at 60fps, just go for the 1700, if there's any chance to game at 120+fps in the future, go for 8700k

I was thinking both of these things, and it's a hell of a lot more expensive to go for the coffee lake..

yes if u are going for ryzen, just wait til april for zen+, then you dodge meltdown+faster single core performance (hopefully), because 3.7/3.8 on the 1700 can be underwhelming in games some times, and buying a 8700k on a budget just hurts.

I'm not so much on a budget tbh, it's just the 8700k is expensive haha

if you can afford it then there's nothing to discuss. Its the best CPU for gaming up to this day. No matter what you throw at it, single threaded emulators to CPU intensive games. It just tanks it like a beast.

None of them are actually required for 1080p 60fps. BUT, what the heck you can afford a 8700k for a gaming rig? What are you waiting for?

idk man, 400 dollars for a hex core where i can get an 8 core for 300. See where i'm coming from?

actually it's very simple math, the 8700k is superior in almost every way, their ipc is similar, so let say you have a 3.7ghz 8core vs a 4.9ghz 6core, the 6core  wins in this case. Ryzen would use very specific ram if i was to build one, flare x which cost like 80dollars more than the corsair dominator i slapped on my 8700k cause it was on sale. you do have to pay more for the motherboard and the heatsink, which ends up costing about 150dollars more total, but in return you get faster gaming and generally a more stable system.

 

I've done 3builds this gen so far, and it comes down to a 1600 (screaming deal at 180dollars) or a 8700k, i never considered a 1700 cause the 8700k's just...better.

for gaming i would recommend the i7 8700k because modern game's aren't programmed to use more of the cpu cores in multi core processing.So in that case you would want ur individual cores to be stronger.

if you are planning to use it in say a video editing studio where more cores are required then i would say u go fore ryzen...

I might just go for the 8700k. Headed to a microcenter tomorrow so we'll see what i come back with lol

In gaming and single-threaded workloads. Multi-core still favors Ryzen, even with overclocking.

I do recommend the 8700K in this situation, but neither is simply better across the board.
