Transferring data

So i'm getting a new computer in a while and i would like to keep all my files without having to reinstall it. Is it possible to unplug my current hard drives from my desktop and just plug it in into the new computer? Any cons or downside to doing it? And are there any better ways for me to transfer all my files from my old computer to the new one.
