Windows Vista Ethernet Problems

popy2308

Hey guys,

I just built *my first* rig over the weekend! Everything went great except for a dead power supply and ethernet problems. I borrowed a friend's extra PSU he had laying around and got right to installing the only OS I have access to right now which is Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. After every reboot I can only connect to the internet for about a minute before being disconnected. And trust me when I tell you this, I have tried almost EVERYTHING to fix it from windows diagnostics to testing multiple different cables. It says it's connected to an unknown network with "limited connectivity". I went into the router and it says the desktop is connected and everything. There is a different desktop connected via ethernet and 2 laptops connected via wireless all working fine. So I've narrowed it down to being issues with Windows Vista or driver problems. I've uninstalled the drivers and installed them again and again. I've also tried to use the repair option on the Vista installation disk. Nothing I have tried has worked. I've ordered a wireless network card and it's on its way, but it would still be nice to know what's causing this issue. I am grateful for any help!

Build:

i5 3570k

Asrock Z77 Extreme4

XFX Radeon HD 6670 1GB

WD Black 1TB

Antec 520W PSU

Cooler Master 912

Router: Cisco Valet M10

First of all get Windows 7, in the mean time:

Open a command prompt (type "cmd" in the search box) and type "ipconfig /all", run one when you have connectivity and another one when you don't. Paste both outputs here, maybe we can help you further.

Do you have a spare NIC to rule out the possibility that its not the boards problem ?

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

I received and installed my wireless card today. Everything worked fine so I disabled it and rebooted on just LAN. It seems that I cannot connect to the internet at all now. Here is the output with just LAN:

Try setting your IP statically

and Use a different DNS like 8.8.8.8 (google DNS)

It also appears that your wireless is still connected.

Try disabling the adapter.

Right click the wifi Icon,

Open network and sharing center

in the side bar on the left select change adapter settings

right click on your wireless adapter and select disable

right click on your wired adapter and select properties

in the list of items under the configure button highlight Internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click properties.

Click the button that says use the following IP address

and put in

IP: 192.168.1.250 (this high will likely prevent in confilcting with the DHCP assigning address to other devices)

subnet : 255.255.255.0

gateway: 192.168.1.1

click the use the following DNS server addresses button

and enter

primary: 8.8.8.8

secondary: 8.8.4.4

good luck

As I said, I've tried everything with that being one of them, but I set it back to obtain it automatically. I tried it again and got the same results. I had my WiFI disabled, there was two outputs in my last post, I didn't separate them very well. The first was with it disabled, the second was with it enabled. Thank you for the suggestion though. I am 95% sure this is a problem with Vista and/or the hardware combination. I'm open to anymore suggestions/help. Thanks for all the help!

Try this Driver.

Uninstall the one you're using first and tick the box that says remove driver from this computer when you do.

Reboot, Install new driver as administrator.

Are there any hardware conflicts?

try using Process Explorer and look for a process registering as hardware interrupts.

do you have any Virtual machine software? e.g. Virtual Box, Hyper-V, VM Ware.

You can try re-install vista as well.

Hey again,

I have also tried reinstalling the drivers, and it just installed version 14.8.0.5 every time, and says that it's up to date. I did it again to check and got the same result. I ran the Process Explorer and there were no hardware interrupts. And no, I don't have any VM software. I was going to try and stay away from reinstalling Vista, and use that as a last resort. But if you know why it just installs the old driver for the LAN, or if you think it's a problem, please let me know. Thanks for all the help!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Vista. And it's fine, I don't really care. Here's some more good news, my wireless card is doing the exact same thing now. I am able to disable then re-enable it and it works for about 10 minutes. I noticed that every time it does that the screen freezes for about 10 seconds, but I am still able to move the mouse, it's just the windows that freeze. Again, thanks for any suggestions and help.
