I have an Asus Maximus Hero IX and 2x8 g.skill ddr4 3600mhz ram installed in slots b1 and b2 (with XMP enabled). I just bought another set of identical ram and put them in slots a1 and a2 and attempt booting up, but didnt post. Qcode threw 53 yellow at me, which says (50-53: memory initialization error, imvalid memory type, or invalid memory speed)

i tried resetting the cmos, but same issues, and now the original pair of RAM that was working no longer boot in the original setup. What can i do? Can anybody help?

I'm not sure if i reset the cmos correctly. I left the power cable in and the psu in the on position, then held the button for 5 seconds.

Another thing i did wrong, call me an idiot, but i held the bios button in another attempt (dont know what it does, didnt look it up,  so call me an idiot. Go ahead lol) but still same issue, yellow 53

To reset your bios, remove your wall-power cable from the PSU, press/tap the power button to remove all power left in the PSU caps.

Then, you pull your CMOS battery, install the CMOS RESET jumper, or Press the CMOS reset button for at least 10 seconds (no matter which method you choose).

Then, reinstall the battery  (if you removed it), plug the computer back in to power, and press the power button.

are both kits exactly the same? and are they on the QVL?

don't look just at the speed, but the full model number

Identical kits. I had 16gb for a few months (just 1kit) working flawlessly. I decided to buy another kit, and now this.

G.skill Tridentz RGB series ddr4

there are 2 separate kits..... http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/MAXIMUS_IX_EXTREME/Z270_ROG_QVL.pdf

more might have previously been available, and no longer on G Skills website

The QVL for your board shows that both are only validated for dual slot not quad slot confirguation

Ohhhh. So basically i have to return the 2x8 kit i just bought then and buy a 4x8 kit? Also i just realised the ram wasnt seated all the way. I just retested and now its 55 yellow. (memory not installed). I just tried the original config of the 2x8 kit in the b slots which boots properly.

EDIT: Nevermind i figured that out

they all should have model numbers on them....are they the same model?

Yes. They are the same model. Identical kits, purchased from the same exact listimg on newegg. I already figured out which sticks are for each kit. So you said I'll have to buy a 4x8gb  quad channel kit to get it to work?

in theory it "should" work

do you have the latest version of the maximus BIOS?

look for the 1, 2, 3 and 4 stick configuration settings, and test the dim slots....you might have a bad dim slot (or stick)

I havent updated the bios at all. I'm not sure how to do that, but I'll look it up. So, before i bring my monitor out to use it for the bios, you're saying that both kits should work together?

there's no reason why they shouldn't

to update the BIOS (or UEFI as they are now called) https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-IX-HERO/HelpDesk_BIOS/

an Asus boards, it is a fairly easy update, and most people would have no issues performing it

so i just tested both kits of ram seperately on the original 2 grey slots that i was using before i bought this 2nd kit, and both kits boot into bios. although i'm unable to update my bios as i do not have a (reliable) USB flash drive. but at least i can rule out a bad ram stick. it's possible that either one of the other slots are bad though. but all 4 ram sticks light up when all the slots are populated.

I got it working!

I've determined my issues were user error most of the time. Small stupid stuff like not having the cpu fan installed, possibly caused boot issues, i didnt realize that i wasnt seating the RAM all the way (haha), and not properly understanding certain terms.

Welp, this was a learning experience for me. Thanks for being so helpful!

Although I'll have to install windows 10 (or Windows 7 Professional), as Windows 7 Home Premium(my current os) only allows 16gb... i plan to have Windows 10, 7, Ubuntu, and a virtualized XP on a 1tb ssd in the future, so that extra ram will be nice.

Okay, so even though I've installed the 2nd set of 2x8gb ram, I just got a bluescreen on windows 7 home premium. i'm aware that windows 7 home premium isn't able to address 32gb of ram, (will be updating eventually to windows 10) but I suspect the issue is rooted from the timings of the RAM kits. does anyone know how i can properly configure the timings to work correctly?
