Hi all,

So, I'm about to build my first ever PC, I normally buy prebuilt but I feel like building this one and getting involved in the PC scene properly.

I'm having a hard time deciding between Ryzen 7 1800x or i7 8700k. Normally I'd go intel without question but with this patch that's coming that may reduce performance, I'm a bit worried about getting an 8700k

What sort of difference is it between the 2 CPUs in terms of power? I know Ryzen has 2 extra cores so will be better for multitasking but I'm more than likely going to be gaming on an Ultrawide, may record some videos and stream now and again.

Also, how hard is it building a PC? I'm confident with everything but the CPU, I've heard some horror stories of people bending pins and stuff

Thanks,

Dan

I don't know anything about the CPU, I just know that I have an i7-7700K, and it rocks at its 4.2 GHz...

Building a PC is not hard, I built my PC by myself and everything went well...

And, you gotta be careful when you build your pc...

Yeah I used to have a PC with a 7700k and it was great, like I said, normally I'd go Intel without question but worried about this upcoming patch

If you aren’t going to be doing any MAJOR multitasking, the 8700K is your best choice. It’ll beat out the Ryzen in most “simple” multitasking needs and in gaming. Just make sure to put a nice overclock on it.

Edit: as far as building be PC, it’s not terribly hard. Just take your time and be prepared to troubleshoot. Be patient as well. When installing the CPU, gently drop it in the socket (aligned) and give it a small, gentle little shake. Don’t worry about breaking any pins.

From what I've read gaming and regular tasks won't be affected much, renders and such seem to be more impacted but it's still guessing as I'd like to see with my own eyes what changed. You are still safe with an intel since there are no benchmarks of Ryzen I assume something is off with amd too. So don't worry for the patch it might be nothing.

I'd take intel over amd for gaming as it's still better.

it's business as usual for normal desktop use, i'd go with the 8700k. but wait for zen+ and see what it offers if you can.

I'm assuming we will find out about Zen+ at CES? It's going to be paired with a GTX 1080 for now but in the next few weeks I want to upgrade to a 1080ti.

I would agree with this statement - here is a good article that talks about benchmarks POST patch. I've noticed no difference in performance, personally, on my systems since i installed the patch.

From what I've read though, Microsoft have patched it but it still requires something from Intel which isn't due until the 9th? Forgive me, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to PC, just moving over from console!
