Xeon E3 or i7?

Happy new year to all,

I use this setup for gaming and some video/3D-Stuff at the moment:

i5 4430
GTX 1070
16 GB G.Skill DD3
Gigabyte H87-HD3 (with 1150 Socket)

I'm looking forward to upgrade the CPU and I wonder what is the best CPU for my motherboard.
Should I choose something like an i7 4790k or a Xeon E3? Next question is, which of the E3 for my board is the best? (CPU List H87-HD3)

Would be glad to get some help :)

considering the fact that the 4690k is better in all regards to the e3 i would say that if price isn't a issue just go with a 4790k i might do the same with my current setup.

Since you can't overclock you might as well grab an E3 1231 v4 since they're generally cheaper than i7 4790ks even today. Look for used deals on both though, see which costs less.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

I'd say that if price isn't an issue, OP should grab Z370 and an 8700K :P

ya if price is not a issue!!! ha thats a big upgrade which (i) should probably do but RAM prices for ddr4 are insane right now

Is the E3-1231 v3 (v4 was a typing error I think) the best CPU for the H87-HD3? Cause I saw a lot of different types of E3 (up to 1286) in the CPU list on the gigabyte page which also differ in their clock.
Yeah, will check some shops for good deals.

If I had no other things do care for I also would upgrade my whole mainboard, CPU and RAM :D

Yeah they're v3s, my bad. Well it's not the best-best Xeon, but the ones above aren't much better and tend to cost a bunch. Like the only better thing is 100-400Mhz more clockspeed and the models ending in 5 or 6 have integrated graphics.

I bought a Xeon E3 1245 v1 for my H61 motherboard because it was the cheapest used Sandy Xeon I could find, though that series also ranges from 1230 to 1280.

Any Xeon above the 1231 has 4 cores, 8 threads, so look for those.

Ah okay, thanks.
So the "best-best" Xeon for my H87-HD3 would be the E3-1281 V3 with 3,7 GHz?
But in fact that this one (and the other ones down to the 1231) are more rare and expensive to find, I think I should go with the 1231

*wait for Ryzen+ since Intel CPUs are all doomed after the next Tuesday Windows patch apparently. Gotta love having an i7 8700k return all the way back to an i7 6700k performance wise thanks to design flaw.

This whole deal has made me so sick... feel like giving a break of tech stuff altogether right now ;/
