Hello there and happy new year  !

So I'm planning to upgrade my pc (from scratch ) so I could have better render times because the other programmes are doing fine.

I'm looking for something where I could have renders 3 maybe 4  times faster than with my current setup.

If it's possible for my budget otherwise I would like to know how much faster it would be (if that is possible).

My budget is around 2500 - 3000 € (could be a little bit more but if it's worth because I'm not building a computer every week  )

My setup : CPU I7 - 4790 3.6Ghz

GPU  NVIDIA GTX 760 Twin Frozr GAMING 2GB

                 Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming

                 RAM 32GB (4 x8) DDR3

                1x SSD 512 GB & 1 Hard drive 7200 1TB

The programmes I'm using are: Maya (Rendering with Arnold who works more on CPU), 3DsMax, ZBrush, Houdini, Nuke/Fusion and also the Adobe products like Photoshop and After Effects

I would also use my computer to play some games (when I have some free time :P ).

I'm not so good with hardware stuff and thought this is the right place to ask this kind of questions.

Also is it better for me to work with an I7/i9 or with a Xeon so I could still add a second CPU later on if I'm still not happy with my render times?

Many thx for the help and sorry if my English is bad (not used to write a lot in English )

Other wise this basicly, but if you want it to work you need to get a z370 chipset mobo, since coffee lake( 8th gen ) only works on that

Thx for the fast answers guys !!

But would an I9 with 10 cores be better for my render times?  Or it doesn't make that much of a difference?

And could I know how fast the renders would be compared to my older setup? (in theory ofc ^^)

Obvs i9 would be better, but the price gap is massive between them (400€ and 1000€) and from what ive seen, 8700 gets really close to 7900.

Your old i7 had 4 cores and 8 threads and 8700 has 6 cores and 12 threads, so it gets a boost from that alone. Also if one of them uses gpu for rendering then its way better than the old one.

The i9-7900K has roughly the same rendering performance as a Threadripper 1920X, https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Arnold-for-Maya-CPU-Comparison-New-14-16-and-18-core-Skylake-X-Processors-1045/. It performs slightly better than a 1950X in common Photoshop functions, https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Photoshop-CC-2017-1-1-CPU-Performance-Core-i9-7940X-7960X-7980XE-1039/.

Other than cpu rendering, the i7-8700K will likely offer as good as or better performance.

Hi again !!

I was still looking around and found other interesting stuff.
I tried to make a list, what do you think about this setup? It's a bit more expensive but I think that with this setup I could make better CPU renders( I use Arnold a lot who use CPU ) without losing power due to the good GPU (If later on, I want to use programmes who use GPU to render or to simulate stuff). Correct me if I'm wrong ^^ and is it also possible to game with this setup?

https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/list/scffKZ

I also need a case but I don't need a fancy one ^^.

Again many thx !

True, my bad didn't mention I have a 512 so don't need to buy it :P
But except for the SSD what do you think of this workstation with Xeon?

The system should do a good job rendering, but editing and other work will suffer because of the relatively low clock. You might consider a compromise like the i9-7920X. While it has three quarters the cores of dual Xeon E5-2650 V4, the max turbo speed is 1.3GHz higher.  It really comes down to what you spend most of your time doing.

Yeah, the i9 is a better performer. Go with his build but maybe consider adding a samsung 960 evo 500gb for €229 or a 250gb for less (around €100) as this ssd will be MILES better than any other (except for the pro) and will help your rendering alot!
