Crippling Indecision - Rebuild or Upgrade?

Hey folks, I've been scouring the internet for answers and have yet to find a satisfactory one. I am currently debating whether or not I should upgrade or just bite the bullet and do a complete rebuild. I'll link my current build along with my possible upgrade path and complete rebuild. I am leaning towards the upgrade path, and slowly buying all the parts for a new the build. What I really want to know is will I be bottlenecked by my current mb/cpu/ram combo? Will it really be worth it to throw a 1080 in my current PC?

Current Build https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/tgZzm8

Upgrade Build https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Zjz72R

Rebuild https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/rWjhnn

Some requirements

  • 1080p gaming would like to transition to 1440p
  • >60fps on Ultra or High in above resolutions
  • Needs to be able to handle everything from Civ to Star Citizen (one day, maybe... hopefully)

Thanks!

Given the obscene price of RAM, why not just throw a 1080(TI) in your pc now, see how that goes, then if the cpu isn't doing the job, upgrade everything else?

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

If you are looking to keep the system (upgrade or rebuild) for a while then the Ryzen is a better choice if you have the money.  The quad core i7s are still great for gaming and will meet your requirements with a 1080, depending on the game, but the ryzen is more capable all around, and the AM4 platform will be in use for a few more years, so when the Ryzen 2 R-9845039485 with 230984520948320 cores comes out later you can upgrade to that :P

Other than the gpu and psu it looks like a pretty decent build. As @Zodiark1593 suggests, upgrade the gpu and see how things go.

I'd also suggest upgrading the psu to something like an EVGA G2 or G3, Corsair RMx or RMi, or Seasonic Focus Plus Gold. If you go for a GTX 1080 Ti, a 650W unit would be good, otherwise a 550W would probably be a more efficient fit.

That's what I've been leaning towards, my fear is 1180 get's announced at CES and the it will be a significant upgrade with the new Vega architecture.

Good point, ya my psu sort of scares me, will definitely upgrade it if I upgrade the gpu. I don't know what I was thinking when I originally built this computer.

Then wait. Consider the fact that there is always something just around the corner. Buying top of the line generally means a longer useful life.

@brob Ya I think I will wait and see what happens at CES in the new year. It is just around the corner. In the mean time I may just get NZXT S340 case and give this old PC a face lift.
