GTX 1060 6GB on a PCIE 1.1

i4Ns

I'm about to buy a GTX 1060 6GB but my motherboard only has PCIE 1.1 slots, while the new gpu uses 3.0. I've been reading a bit but im not still sure, will it work? I dont care if I lose a bit on performance.

it will work yes, but you will also lose a ton of performance. And considering your CPU is probably also shit, you will lose even more performance.

How old is the platform? Are you sure your PSU even supports the card? What system is it? What's the budget for upgrades? US?

If an RX 580 is around the same price it's likely a better buy.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

That's a terrible way to buy PC hardware, especially with GPU pricing being high right now.

What system is it and what's it's power supply?

What's the pricing on the GT 1030/RX550 GTX 1050/RX 560-1024 and 1050ti?

It's a bad time to buy mid range GPUs, especially when you're likely to be bottlenecked by the PCI-e slot and CPU, though I don't know why it's not a 2.0 slot

Better yet just save your money and buy a Raven Ridge APU system in a month or 2, should come with pretty decent onboard graphics, just need DDR4 RAM which may be pricey.

I was going to buy a 1050ti if the 1060 wasnt viable. Still need 2 slots while I only have one, is it just a size thing or is it necessary for it to work

Just save your money for the coming Raven Ridge APUs, that way you get a better CPU and a better GPU at the same time

Or find a really cheap used GPU

So the 2 slots needed is just a space thing right?

The card physically occupies two slots. The second slot is not for air room.

You already have a 1050, which occupies two slots as well...

Why would you even buy a 1060 if you have a 1050 before you buy the CPU?

I am unsure about that PSU quality, I would give a look at this if I were you:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X Cooler: Corsair H100i Platinum SE Mobo: Asus B550-A GPU: EVGA RTX 2070 XC RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 3200MHz 16CL 4x8GB (DDR4) SSD0: Crucial MX300 525GB SSD1: Samsung QVO 1TB PSU: NZXT C650 Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow Monitor: Asus VG259QM (240Hz)

I usually edit my posts immediately after posting them, as I don't check for typos before pressing the shiny SUBMIT button.

CPU: Ryzen 5 7600 Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S Mobo: Asus B650E-i RAM: Kingston Server Premier ECC 2x32GB (DDR5) SSD: Samsung 980 2x1TB HDD: Toshiba MG09 1x18TB; Toshiba MG08 2x16TB HDD Controller: LSI 9207-8i PSUCorsair SF750 Case: Node 304
