Looking at core i7 6700k.  price range up to $500. PC specs: Acer aspire t tc-220, and a10 7800 quad core processor, and radeon r7 340 2gb, 16 gb ddr3 ram.

Save up more, you will have to change most of it. Both GPU and CPU are trash

i would suggest i7 4790 or 4790k

and a z87 or z97 motherboard

decent 500watt PSU

new GPU

that way you can re-use your RAM and HDD from your current pc

nothing but bad news man and upgrade makes your ram unuseable so even that needs to be changed your your looking at around
-about 300$ for CPU (i recommend a 1600x or 1700x) or 8700k if your gunna ball out 400$ i have a 6700k and it just isnt ment for streaming
-about 80-120$ for a mobo
-about 200$ for 16G of DDR4 RAM (DDR3 is out)

your gpu cant really hang unless your using 720p monitor from the dinosaur age so thats another
250-750$ just there i recommend a 1070ti for around 470$ for 1080p and 1440p and a good monitor to pair with it

youll probably need a new PSU a decent bronze 650W for a good brand really

cooler is your choice of air or water

id perfer water to add a thermal buffer and better heat dissipation and noise control
celsius S36 would be the best 360 rad imo
h100i V2 is a good 240 rad

and a 120 isnt really worth it imo
this is around 100-120$
just remember dont get a 360 if you cant fit it but more length is better cooling means quieter too

might as well get a case while your at it any one you like really but i recommend stuff like a cougar panzer good ventilation and everything is pretty much thought of aside from a verticle gpu mount

optional SSD if you dont want 5 minute boot times and perfer 17 second ones

this is what i would do for a content creator/gamer build everything heres is more than enough to get me started and  keep me relevent for 2-3 years and satisfied for 2-3 years maybe 4 years with some modesty

its just real hard to upgrade from that dinosaur to today so 500$ wont cut it. take it as advice from me

Damn thanks though I'll hold off half a year and put my budget up to something like $1500. It's just not a very old PC and runs most games really well. It was also a $1500 gift from my parents and I don't want to offend them.

$500 is more than enough for a competent upgrade.  Ryzen 3 1200, 16gb DDR4 ram, SSD, GTX 1050, and you're off to the races.  Your PSU *should* handle it fine (it's 300W max), and you can keep your case, HDD, accessories.

You'll be able to handle most games at 1080 high / ultra settings.  Video editing / processing will take a bit longer than a 7770k or Ryzen 7, but I doubt you're on a time-sensitive production schedule, lol...

The machine I posted above will handle that no problem.  And you could re-sell your AMD card, and old mobo/cpu/ram combo to recoup $150 or so.
