Should I wait on it or buy this GPU or others?

Yana

Hello and Merry Christmas!

I was wanting to buy this GPU https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127963 but sadly it ran out of stock the day I wanted to purchase it. I talked with Newegg and they recommended me this one https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814126122&cm_re=GTX_1060_6gb-_-14-126-122-_-Product but this one has a lot of reports of overheating a lot. Should I find a different GPU or sit on the MSI one until it comes back into stock, take the one Newegg  recommended me, or lastly, search for another one?

I'm from the UK but I have talked to several Americans who've never had issues with Amazon for one. I've also heard that micro centre and BestBuy aren't bad either. Generally what makes a seller reputable is if they have a good returns policy and are big enough to not vanish within a few weeks if your product is DOA. Then they're a fairly safe bet.

As far as the graphics cards go, those look very similar specs wise. I would get the ASUS right now if it was me but that's cause I love white components. MSI's stuff is really good though. I have the GTX 960 with the similar shroud and I have to say it looks great.

nah, those reviews probably comes from people with faulty cards. My 1070 with the same cooler but higher TDP stayed at about 70C in heavy load in the summer, about 30C ambient temperature. I cant hear from it when the hard drives are spinning.

Good in performance, but rather boring on the looks. I mean, there's no RGB lights nor backplate. Doesnt affect it's good performance though. Of course dont expect Strix version's overclocking potential.

I had an Asus Dual GTX 1070. Max 77C under heavy load with 1750RPM fan speed at 22C ambient temperature after overclocking. I replaced the stock thermal paste with Noctua NT-H1. It was slightly too loud for me and high temperatures killed high boost clocks but since GTX 1060 uses around 30W less power I would say it's fine. That MSI Gaming has a better cooler and would run much quieter and cooler but it also costs more.

do I need to do all of that to enjoy the card?

No, you don't need to do anything. Replacing thermal paste usually voids warranty and to be honest it didn't help much. GTX 1060 is 120W and 1070 is 150W so you should have lower temps than I had.

And on newegg, when people say that they were getting really hot cards, is that a messed up card thats not supposed to be that way?

It shouldn't be really hot but I've read that the stock thermal paste isn't great and sometimes there isn't enough thermal paste. The problem is that you can't really replace the thermal paste without voiding the warranty.

If you are really concerned about getting a hot and loud card I recommend spending some more money for a better cooler. For example MSI Gaming, Asus Strix, Palit Jetstream, Gigabyte G1 Gaming rev 2.0 or EVGA SSC (dual fan) have good coolers. My Asus Dual 1070 broke down and I replaced it with Strix GTX 1070 and this is so much quieter and runs over 10C cooler.

Hello again, for the MSI gaming X GPU I would need a 6+2 pin connector for it, atm my PSU has a 6 pin power connector. Is it easy to switch psus? Do I need to check if its compatable with my motherboard? and lastly, is this tower a normal ATX, making it able to fit the GPU?IMG_1216.thumb.JPG.6f6f5a814e319aacd007c79b63f50a83.JPG

Same goes for me, not sure if I should get a new GPU or wait until new release next year. Suck with my 970 for now, but it does what it does well.
