Is 99% Usage Ok?

Go to solution Solved by Damascus,

99/100% juat means you are getting the absolute best your card can provide, no problems there

So I am still relatively new to the specifics of PC and was wondering if 99% usage on the GPU is normal. I have had different cards over the years but never really paid attention to the percentage being used. I upgraded to a GTX 1080 and obviously want to keep it running as optimally as possible so I was wondering if higher percentages continuously was ok for the card.

Note: It is not always at 99% that is just the max in CPUID monitoring in some games at 1920x1080.

That's odd that it's hitting 99 at 1080p. No, running at 99% is not bad for the card, what is bad is the card getting too hot from running at 99% for extended periods of time.

is it possible its due to the settings being turned all up for the most part? Including vsync

yes thats why, it would be a problem if it didnt run at 100%, if it ran at like 30% while playing ark that would be weird

if your GPU is running at full trottle like that it's a good sign...if you are at 1080p max settings with some nice clean anti-aliasing rendering a nice looking demanding modern game and hitting your framerate target, i'm all for it, have fun!

Vsync locks the output rate to the monitors refresh rate. It should lower the cards load unless you have a high refresh rate monitor. If you do then that high usage is to be expected.

Typically I try to find a balance between performance and visuals, turning down settings until the GPU load drops below 100 regularly then refining the settings. You'll find that there are a lot of settings that you could disable and not even notice a difference in visuals. A lot of the settings are just marketing and can barely be seen in a side by side.

That being said, there should really be no need to turn down settings with a 1080.

Yes, you want 99%  usage. That means you're getting the most out of your hardware. If it's below 99% that means you're bottlenecked and your hardware is being wasted. Cheer for your effective purchasing decisions!

what i found to give the best results back when i used a no Gsync or freesync monitor that was 1080p 60hz...

you should set a custom resolution in windows first and see how far you can push the refresh rate of your monitor, and then use MSI afterburer/riva tuner and lock the max FPS to 3 FPS more than the refresh rate of your overclocked monitor...this will ensure minimal screen tearing, no input lag, fast gameplay for cheap.

for example the monitor i used at the time was good at 65hz so i was locking my FPS to 68 with rivatuner and in BF4 i was destroying noobs and good players left and right...this was on 60hz 1920x1080p 24'' monitor...

27'' 2560x1440 would me more appropriate to a GTX 1080 though, an i tend to never use Vsync...now i have a Gsync monitor with 144hz so sky is the limit now, but if you try my tips i'm sure you'll like it...racing games, FPS, adventure etc. i always used this and it worked amazing.

if you use 8xMSAA and ultra settings in battlefiled 1 or similar good looking games...wildlands etc...you'll get there with a GTX 1080...ultra all the things.

Tried bf1 on ultra, even with scaling up it wouldn't touch 100%, 83 max. May have been a cpu problem but I wasn't looking. As the cpu normally sits at 70/80% on 1440 with the gpu at 100. One of my old cards perform better on 1080p given how cpu intensive bf1 can be compared to my other games.

Try 65 then 70 and then 75 hz

when the monitor can't stand it, it will get black screen and revert to previous one...all monitors can do 65hz, most can do 70hz and some will do up to 75hz.

if you get black screen at 75hz, try to set it to 72hz etc...is you get black at 70hz try 68hz...you can't damage anything ive done it several times on many machines.

i must admit my experience with BF1 was on ultra 1440p as well, and with a single card i would get on average i would say 100FPS...90 to 120FPS is where it was at on most multiplayer maps and CPU load (4770K@4.2ghz) would be anywhere from 65 to 85%. game played freaking well and smooth. GPU maxed out.
