Ping Spikes

I recently installed a dir 854 in to go with the comcast modem/router (to improve wifi coverage). I succeeded in my original goal. But now my router has incredibly slow up speed, which I think is causing my random ping spikes in games. I now only have about 1 mb/s for my up speed. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!
