Unstable temps with i7-6700k Turbo Boosted

So I got a new i7-6700k and it was already clocked to 4.2GHz. How high should my voltage be? CPU-Z and Core Temp are showing me 1.388v-1.455v and such high numbers are really concerning after reading through other forums about overclocking etc. Also the temps are jumping from 26 to sometimes 40 but usually to 36. Is this a normal occurrence??

All normal.  The CPU will be fine unless you try to overclock it without knowing what you are doing, or run it without a cooler.

That voltage is pretty high, I would lock it to 1.25V for stock clocks or update your BIOS as it's likely that newer revisions have better more refined vcore tables. What motherboard are you using? The temps you mentioned are not a problem.

That's quite high, some motherboards have their "Auto" voltage setting set too high so I suggest you downvolt it manually. For 4.2GHz something in the range of 1.25V is more appropriate, I'm running my 6700K at 4,5GHz at 1,28V at the moment for instance.

That stock voltage, while high, is perfectly fine and will not caue any damage, unless it is that high when running prime95 or something like that (it most likely wont.)

The 7600k would burst into flames at that voltage, 1.3-1.35 is max I will hit on my 7600k and that's on a custom loop at 5ish ghz with temps hitting 80-90

 

Also make sure you are reading the correct temps, use the program real temp for per core temp and not the package temp.  Pay attention to tjmax and stay well enough away from it.

I would highly recommend going into bios and setting everything to default, this is obviously new territory for you and should be nothing but stock.  What cooling do you have?

 

you can save the profile before resetting to default

nope, you can, my dumb ass cooked my 7700k because I tried to go naked die on a water block.  Didn't realize there was a 1/4" air gap with the IHS gone. was a good 7700k too, hit 5.1ghz with no HT and booted at 5.2 while being mildly useable, just wouldn't stress test

also temps are measured during a stress test, not average usage

 

edit: sorry if I sound like a jerk.  You shouldn't be running voltage that high, it's not safe. Go to default and if needed lower the vcore as suggested above to 1.25  Then watch some video's and read some guides on how to overclock.  Overclocking is an entire procedure not just a setting.  You need to know what to change, how to test it and how to monitor it.  All very easy once you know how but difficult to get a grasp on at first. edit: oh and auto overclocking is no good.

Sounds like multi-core enhancement to me, especially if Asus board. Best turned off. Standard for 6700k is 4.2 GHz one core turbo, 4.0 GHz otherwise. MCE sets it to 4.2 GHz all cores and jacks up the voltage. Based on my two samples of 6700k, manually setting 1.25v should be ok for manual overclock of all cores at 4.2 GHz, but do verify.

Yeah I feel like if I would have overclocked my 6850K by myself I would've fucked it up somehow, so I had my friend do it for me
