An Internet User

my sister in law has a mac with an external usb 3.0 HDD she stores all her files on. One day she disconnected it without "safely ejecting" it. Unless i'm mistaken. that should at most only corrupt a file being written. but somehow it has caused the drive to become inaccessible. It has somehow made it so the drive never gets assigned a drive letter.

If I go into Disk Management I can see the drive there and allocated.

If I right-click all the options are grayed out except Delete Volume and Help.

I have cloned the drive to a standard sata drive and the same thing happens. How Can I access this data? I'm willing to try anything on this cloned drive to get the data off.

What format is the drive in? Was it only used on a Mac? If so, it's probably HFS+ which isn't readable by default on Windows. If this is the issue, TransMac is good for accessing these drives on Windows.

I'm pretty sure its in HFS yes. but its not accessable on the mac either. Is Transmac just a software? how would I use it to access the drive in its current state?

Yes, TransMac is just a program you install on Windows. http://www.acutesystems.com/tmac/tmsetup.exe That is the link for the Windows installer.

got it running and I can see the drive listed (without a drive letter).

If I click on it it asks to restart with admin privilages to access the drive, so I allow.

but it says "No mac volumes found"

How can I see if its in HFS for sure?
