Hey,

I've:

AMD FX 8320

16(8+8)GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM

ASUS nVidia GTX 960

1TB WD Blue HDD

1TB Toshiba HDD

Gigabyte GA-750A

I want to upgrade my PC, what should I upgrade? Not for gaming, I want to keep DDR3 memory as they're working fine. I want to spend ~$300 and sell the parts no longer required.

If you want a more reliable PC for general purpose, an SSD is all you need.

You might want to look for a 1151 CPU with DDR3 support maybe, for a little boost. Something like a 7400 + motherboard would do the job.

I've Linux installed on it, I've a 720p monitor. I want to make some videos soon, start a blog etc I would also like to switch to MacOS but I hear only Intel platform is supported there at least in the newer versions.

Recently upgrading from a FX-8350, the switch to a Ryzen 1600x was pretty big. I wouldn't suggest buying lagged behind intel boards due to the value of it not really working out in your favor for the future. I would suggest just getting a SSD for now and just keep going with what you got until the future where you have more money to drop.

What's your use case for you pc right now?

That's what I'm thinking of, I have actually ordered a Sandisk 120GB SSD l, what Intel CPU should I invest in?

Honestly man, you can do videos on that rig, just get a SSD for the time being to fix that sluggish load times on your OS. Upgrading your other parts won't really help you in any meaningful way for your current use case.

Depends on the resolution you're planning your videos to.. if it's 720p you're perfectly fine right now.
If you want a boost and work on 1080p, you can go with older 6th-7th generation CPU +motherboards (there are a few that supports DDR3, one from ASUS was called.. H170 PLUS D3 I think). You don't need an OCable CPU, so a 6400-6600 or 7400-7600 CPU will be just fine.

If you go to the used route, you could get a i7 + mobo for a really good price. The SSD is ok, I always suggest the Samsung EVO for best performance but if it's just to speed things up (a lot, compared to a HDD) it's gonna work fine.

I also have a Cooler Master Hyper 212X Heat sink, it keeps my PC in sweet spot of ~5#C during stress test and ~15-20C in idle

You can use that heatsink on other motherboards with a mount modification. What program's were you thinking of using?

for video editing and rendering, a 1600 would be too expensive with ram prices now. get a Chinese X79 motherboard and 8-10 core Xeon for an upgrade. you can sell off your old hardware and use the money for a better monitor.

Switching to MacOs will require a little bit of leg work to get a hackintosh system working with parts possibly being a nightmare. I'd suggest just trying out a free subscription of Adobe programs and trying to see how your computer handles that workload before upgrading. You could upgrade your motherboard/cpu, but the performance upgrade for the cost might not necessarily be the best to go with.

Start off with an SSD and a nice new IPS monitor. If you think you'll be upgrading big in the future, go 1440p but you can get a nice little 24" 1080p IPS panel to start with.
After that, I'd go with an R5 1600 and B350 Board. 8-16GBs of RAM depending on what you want to do. Stock cooler is plenty for the R5 1600. You can probably sell your FX setup, RAM and Mobo for a fair sum . What PSU do you have also?
After that I'd look into GPUs, if you're into used stuff Volta isn't to far behind and you might be able to find someone trying to get rid of their GTX 1070-1080Ti to buy Volta.

i7-6700k  Cooling: Deepcool Captain 240EX White GPU: GTX 1080Ti EVGA FTW3 Mobo: AsRock Z170 Extreme4 Case: Phanteks P400s TG Special Black/White PSU: EVGA 850w GQ Ram: 64GB (3200Mhz 16x4 Corsair Vengeance RGB) Storage 1x 1TB Seagate Barracuda 240GBSandisk SSDPlus, 480GB OCZ Trion 150, 1TB Crucial NVMe

I have a Corsair VS 450 PSU. What sum should I put up my current setup for? Also, is my Cooler Master Hyper 212X not compatible with newer Ryzen platform?

It is, it's just that the bracket for the Cooler Master is semi hard to find. I had to buy my mounting bracket for mine due to low availability but it seem's it almost close to free now.  http://www.cmstore-usa.com/ryzen-am4-x-bracket-for-hyper-212/

if your current 212x mounts are incompatible then you can order am4 mounts from coolermaster's website. get a better PSU, the VS450 is low quality. a CX450/M or be quiet pure power 10 are good upgrades.

Running MacOS on a non Apple machine is a pain the ass. I know from lots of personal experience. It can be done, if you’re lucky, but don’t expect to have a great experience doing intensive things. You’ll have to ask elsewhere for help on it though as that’s Hackintosh.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Why though? Sony Vegas 15 is 100 times better than either Adobe Premiere or Apple's Final Cut Pro, specially if you have a nVidia GPU as CUDA Acceleration for rendering works 10 times better on Sony Vegas.
