USB 3.0/Thunderbolt RAID enclosure build

Hey all, 

Recently I've been looking at investing in a 4bay+ Raid enclosure but have decided that it would be cheaper to build my own. I'll probably be building it in a small PC case but am unsure what parts I'll need other than a power supply and the drives. I want to get the most amount of speed out of this setup as possible. I'll also want to be able to hot swap out a drive if it fails. What parts would you recommend and how would you go about your build?
