LAN gaming using only ethernet cable?

I'm going on vacation soon. I thought that me and my brother could do some LAN gaming Minecraft in case of boredom during our stay. The only problem is that we generally will have no internet on the vacation.

Is it possible to connect an ethernet cable between our laptops and play together? Both of our laptops have an ethernet jack.

To do this, you would need what is called a cross over cable.

It's actually likely a crossover isn't needed. Most NIC's used in systems for the last 5+ years can work fine with both normal and crossover cables. It negotiates with the other side in what config they'll run :P

The only thing you'll need to do is assign an IP to both NIC's so your pc knows where to send the packages to.

Most 100Mbps Ethernet-adapters can already do automatic negotiation for that, no special cable needed, and I have never heard of a single gigabit-adapter not having the same feature.

My laptop is from 2012 or so, his laptop too.

so that's okay.
Just put the lan cable in both of your laptops and set up a static IP address for both laptops with the same subnet.
So for example:
192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
With subnetmask:
255.255.255.0
you can leave the default gateway empty and the dns servers you can leave on auto.
This way you should be able to find each other.

Or run an application like this:
http://www.dhcpserver.de/cms/
on one of the laptops to set up the IP addresses.
